- ---> Notes
-
- Does this sound familiar.....?
-
- Gary: OK, guys, Sparky wants to join our adventure into the Kobolds
- lair, but he's never played before. So he'll have to start a
- new character.
- Mark: (Groan...)
- Mike: Not again!
- Jeff: (Moan...)
- Fritz: But I've gotta be home SOME time this week!
- Gary: Come on you guys! You were a beginner once, remember?
- OK, Sparky, first get the Player's Handbook, and the DM's Guide,
- oh and we'll probably need the Unearthed Arcana too...
- Mark: (zzz...)
- Jeff: I think I'll go for pizza.......
-
- Creating a character has never really been FUN. Even for the experienced
- player, flipping through page after page of books and tables isn't exactly
- considered a good time.
-
- CGEN started out as a little program on my Commodore 64 to help me
- create characters without all that. However, a 64 does have its
- limitations, (like 64k), and the time it took my lil' 64 to read
- the tables from disk was almost equal to looking it up in the books.
- (ALMOST) Then I bought a PC and thought I'd try it on her. On hard-
- disk, the advantages of my little creation really stood out. Even on
- the PC's floppy drives, it saved a lot of time.
-
- So, here it is in all its (shining?) glory. (You decide)
-
- Hope it proves useful.
-
- ---> Requirements
-
- IBM PC or compatible with at least 256k of memory (512k suggested)
- Printer (To print AD&D characters)
- Monitor (Color or monocrome)
- One of the following;
- Hard-disk (Recommended)
- 720k or 1.2 Mb floppy
- Two 360k floppy drives
- That's all folks!
-
- ---> Abbreviations used
-
- DMG - Dungeon Masters Guide
- PH - Players Handbook
- UA - Unearthed Arcana
- HD - Hard drive
-
- - ii -
-
-
-
- ---> Different configurations
-
- -> If you have a HD, 1.2Mb or 720k drive, simply insert your CGEN 3.1 disk &
- log onto that drive. Then type CGENINST. (No disk swapping needed here!)
-
- -> If you have two 360k floppy drives, simply insert your CGEN V3.1 disk
- and log onto drive A. Then type CGENINST. Remebmer to select "2" on
- the configuration menu.
-
- ---> What's new?
-
- In V2.0, the Equipment shoppe, and Spell menus were added.
-
- In V3.1, we now a multi-classed character generation. It almost required
- a whole re-write of CGEN.EXE and SUB_A.EXE. That was a job, lemme tell
- ya! But what the heck. It was fun.
- Also, Num Lock isn't needed. Just use the cursor keys.
- The option for color was also added (making the screens more attractive).
- You'll also notice I've added installation programs to make setup a little
- easier for those not familiar with PKUNZIP. I also fixed some bugs that
- seemed to slip past me. I think I swatted them all this time!
- If you DO, however, find a problem with the program, please write and
- tell me. I'll get it fixed as soon as I can.
- Plus there are a load of other changes.
-
- V3.1? How 'bout I take a little break first? However, I may create
- a new version which will include new races, (Like minotuar, etc.) soon.
- But I'd like to see how popular this version is first.

-
-
- ---> Starting up
-
- This program may be executed from anywhere (Floppy or HD) as it does not
- require sub directories. So long as all the associated programs are in
- the same directory.
-
- To start, simply change to the drive and directory the program is on
- Type CGEN and press ENTER or RETURN.
-
- ---> Moving around the menus
-
- After the logo screen, you will come to the main menu. The CREATE option
- will be hilighted. To move around just press <- to move the hilighted
- selection one to the left, and -> to move the hilighted selection one
- to the right. Alternatively, press the first letter of the selection
- you want. When the desired option is hilighted, press ENTER or RETURN.
- Note that the options unavailable to you are in a darker color.
-
- When menus appear with letters to the left of the selection, press the
- corrosponding letter.
-
- ---> Creating a character
-
- After initially executing CGEN, the only options you may use are CREATE,
- LOAD or QUIT. (See Loading character from disk).
-
- Since CREATE is already highlighted, press ENTER/RETURN.
-
- RACE
-
- You should now see the RACE menu. Simply select to race desired by
- pressing the corresponding letter.
-
- CLASS
-
- You'll note that all classes are not listed. This is because of the
- class limitations on page 13 of the PH. Now select the desired class.
-
- AGE
-
- The age of the character effects the ability scores so choose well.
- (See page 13 of the DMG)
-
- LEVEL
-
- Sometimes someone may want to join in on an adventure for, oh say,
- 7th to 9th level characters. This comes in handy here. You may select
- levels 1-9. (Don't press ENTER/RETURN after typing the number)
-
- ALIGNMENT
-
- This effects some spells (for magic using classes) eg. Protection from
- Evil (if you're of Good or Neutral align) or Protection from Good for
- those of evil alignments.
-
- - 1 -
-
-
- ABILITY SCORES
-
- The computer will now simulate rolling 3d6. After rolling your raw
- ability scores, it will adjust them according to minimums and maximums
- for race and class. (See ability adjustment tables [Pages 9-13 of the PH],
- Character race table III [Page 15 of the PH], Penalties and bonuses for
- race [Page 14 of the PH]. Also the information on pages 16-17 of the PH).
- When the computer generates anything that may be effected by ability
- adjustments, it will be altered accordingly. eg. Hit points for
- Constitution, Saving throws and number of clerical spells for exceptional
- wisdom scores, armor class for dexterity, etc. Yes, it's all there!
-
- THE SHOPPE
-
- Now you will be taken to the shoppe. Here you may purchase armor,
- weapons, and miscellaneous items. The weapons unusable by your selected
- class, will have a dash (-) in front of them. If your selected class is a
- cleric and you want to purchase an edged weapon, for instance, the
- computer will beep (See CHARACTER CLASSES TABLE II (ARMOR AND WEAPONS
- PERMITTED) on Page 19 of the PH). Nice try.
-
- CHOOSING SPELLS
-
- For magic using classes, the computer will now go to the, oh what shall
- we call it, the spell scriber's guild. (How's that?) All the spells
- out of the PH are there with the execption of a couple of the 1st level
- Magic-user spells. This is because there just isn't enough space on the
- screen to fit them all! The missing spells are; Find Familiar, Mending,
- Nystul's Magic Aura, and Unseen servant. Sorry folks!
-
- On the upper right hand of the screen you will see a series of five
- numbers, these numbers indicate the remaining number of spells that your
- character may memorize at his/her level. (Levels 1-5 respectively) These
- will change as you choose your spells. When there are nothing but 0's,
- then it's time to choose the DONE option and move on.
-
- The computer will now display your character.
-
- ---> Saving character to disk
-
- You may save your character for later retreval and printing by choosing
- this option. Simply type the name of the file to which you want to save
- your character. Sorry, but due to circumstances beyond (at least my)
- control, you are limited to a name of 8 characters in length.
-
- ---> Loading character from disk
-
- You may load any previously saved character from disk by way of this
- option. I think you guys can figure out how to use this option yourself.
-
- ---> Displaying your character
-
- This one speaks for itself too. For those of you without printers, get
- out the old pencil & paper and start filling out the character sheet.
-
- ---> Printing your character
-
- This option should work well with most any printer capable of printing
- letters and numbers, (Doesn't exactly narrow it down, does it?) as no
- special graphics are used. Just the standard ASCII character set.

-
- ---> Second thoughts
-
- I hope this will satisfy even most of the tough by-the-bookers as
- I have encorporated every rule I could find into this work. If you
- have any suggestions, questions, or comments, please don't hesitate
