- SCENERY FOR LOS ANGELES AND ORANGE COUNTIES, CALIFORNIA
-
- These ZIP files contain spectacular static and dynamic
- scenery files created with Microsoft Aircraft & Scenery Designer
- and that supplement the rather bare Los Angeles default scenery
- in Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0. They focus on the regions
- surrounding and between Los Angeles International and John Wayne--
- Orange County Airports. They are dense and large, and your ASD
- needs to be configured for at least 24K of static and 28K of
- dynamic memory. Only ASD was used in creating the scenery files,
- so they are easy to edit. No NAVAIDS have been added to the
- default scenery, but many airports have added (Long Beach, Los
- Alamitos, Fullerton, Tustin and El Toro MCAS, March AFB) and
- others are enhanced.
- The CASLAXRN (CASLAXRN.SC1, CASLAXRN.DY1, CASLAXRN.DOC) and
- CASSNARN files (CASSNARN.SC1, CASSNARN.DY1, CASSNARN.DOC) comple-
- ment one another (the .DOC files are identical), and the bound-
- aries are set so that you may fly back and forth between them if
- automatic scenery loading is enabled. They share some features to
- help keep transitions smooth. The LA--Orange County region is
- vast, and you have to cover many miles to see everything. Accuracy
- has been a high priority, and in general the more distinctive or
- complex a feature, the closer it approaches reality. (A compli-
- cated building should closely model its original; a plain one may
- just stand in for several.) The Los Angeles VFR Terminal Area
- Chart is recommended to identify features. Everyone should be
- able to recognize Disneyland. The large ship docked at Long Beach
- is the Queen Mary, and next to it is the dome housing Howard
- Hughes' Spruce Goose. Less well-known are the enormous hangars
- north of John Wayne--Orange County Airport at the Tustin Marine
- Corps Air Station. They were built during WWII to house blimps
- and are the largest wooden structures in the world. Although they
- are historic buildings, you may fly through them if you are
- careful.
- The CASSNARN mode starts you up parked at John Wayne--Orange
- County Airport (SNA), one of the busiest and most dangerous
- flying enrvironments in the country. Give way to the 767 on your
- left before following the Cessna ahead as it takes off and enters
- the left-traffic pattern. Beware of renegade fighter pilots. The
- CASLAXRN mode starts you up on 24R at Los Angeles International
- (LAX)--not normally open to general aviation craft. Today the
- runway is all yours, but if you choose any of the others you'll
- have to dodge heavy commercial traffic. The skies are less busy
- but by no means empty over Long Beach.
- I will be grateful to anyone flying through this region who
- sends me comments and corrections or enhancements.
