  98. At the DOS prompt (I will assume C:>) Type the following

  104. type this    COPY A:*.*    and press ENTER.

  106. Please do the last COPY command for as many disks as were received
  107. in your PUZZLE BUSTER distribution package.

  109. When all disks have been copied to your hard drive you are ready to
  110. use PUZZLE BUSTER. Place your distribution disks in a safe place.

  117. the screen. Although it is an easy program to use there are some
  118. powerful features you should know about.

  124. prompt and press ENTER. If you have EGA graphics or higher on your
  125. system you will see the PUZZLE BUSTER logo. Press any key when you
  126. are ready to continue. You will now see the PUZZLE BUSTER opening
  127. screen which is similar to the picture on the cover of this
  128. document.

  179. Solving a crossword puzzle with PUZZLE BUSTER is very simple. 
  180. Look at a puzzle in your local newspaper. It is usually a 15*15
  181. grid. 
  182.  
  183. Your first task is to enter the black squares. To do this, simply 
  184. move the cursor over as many spaces as required for the first 
  185. word across the top of the grid. Hit Enter. Two blocks appear as 
  186. shown above. 
  187. PUZZLE BUSTER automatically places the symmetric twin block for 
  188. you! All good puzzles are symmetrical in nature. Finish entering 
  189. all of the blocks to match your newspaper crossword puzzle.
  190.  
  191. NOTE. If you place a block in the wrong spot just move the 
  192. cursor to it and press the spacebar. They will both disappear. 
  193. Del will also erase a block.

  216. Now is a good time to save this grid to disk. It is now called
  217. NEW.PUZ. Press F8. If you wish to keep this name just press
  218. enter. A better way is to name this puzzle as 110191 (the date)
  219. or any name you like. After you have saved the puzzle press any
  220. key and you will be back in business.

  222. The next thing to do is to get PUZZLE BUSTER to CALCULATE BOX #'s.
  223. Press F4 then y. Move your cursor around the grid and you will see
  224. that all ACROSS, DOWN, ACROSS and DOWN numbers appear at the bottom
  225. of the grid. Nice ! If you add or erase a block the box numbers
  226. will disappear because they are no longer valid. Press F4 again and
  227. PUZZLE BUSTER will re-calculate them for you.

  229. Now, lets try our first clue. In my puzzle it is

  233. I'm pretty sure that the answer is PASS. Go to 1 Across / Down
  234. and type PASS.

  239. PASTA.

  744. As a prelude to adding clues there is something I must mention.
  745. Always check for duplicate words in your puzzle. It is amazing how
  746. easily and often they will slip into the puzzle unnoticed. It is
  747. also very difficult to spot them with the naked eye. Good puzzles
  748. simply never have 2 words the same in them. To check your puzzle
  749. for dupes just press F6 SEEK Word Pairs. PUZZLE BUSTER will check
  750. every possible angle for dupes and will warn you if it finds one.
  751. If a dupe is found just cursor to the offending word and change it
  752. to something else. The following screens show PUZZLE BUSTER doing
  753. its SEEK Word Pair check.

  798. There are a few rules to ADDING CLUES.
  799.  
  800.      1) The puzzle must contain NO blank spaces.
  801.      2) The puzzle must not have a previous clue file.
  802.  
  803. A puzzle can only be changed if Clues have NOT been added to it. 
  804. This is because by changing even one letter in a completed puzzle
  805. you will have made the clue for that change word invalid. I will
  806. show you a way to keep your old clues for this changed puzzle later
  807. but if a block has been added or deleted from a completed puzzle
  808. there is no way to get the clues back without re-entering new ones.
  809. You see, if a block is added to or from the puzzle then the box
  810. numbers can not match up properly with the clues which were based
  811. on the old numbers.

  1469. Duplicated Words - Work Around
  1470.  
  1471. If you are Adding Clues to a finished puzzle and discover that you
  1472. forgot to check for duplicate words you can do two things.
  1473.  
  1474. 1)   Forget it and just make up a different clue. This is not the
  1475.      most professional way to create a puzzle though.
  1476.  
  1477. 2)   Change the actual word. You can do the following as long as
  1478.      you DO NOT alter the block pattern for your puzzle. Do not add
  1479.      or delete any blocks!. First exit Adding Clues by pressing
  1480.      ESC.
  1481.      Load the file with option [2] Load Puzzle at the main menu. If
  1482.      you get the warning that clues exist for this puzzle just give
  1483.      a new name that you are sure does not exist yet. Try XYZ or
  1484.      something similar. Now with XYZ on the screen you may use all
  1485.      of PUZZLE BUSTER's features to change the duplicated word to
  1486.      something better. When you have done this (and you did NOT
  1487.      change any of the blocks) do this :
  1488.      
  1489.      1)   Press F8 and type the original name of the puzzle that
  1490.           had the duplicate words in it. When asked Overwrite this
  1491.           file ?
  1492.           Press y. Press Esc until you are at the main menu. You
  1493.           may now select [4] Add Clues to Puzzle and correct any
  1494.           clues that are now wrong since some of the words were
  1495.           changed when you did the above operation.
  1496.           You may want delete XYZ.PUZ because it has served its
  1497.           purpose.

  1501. Backing up your puzzles.
  1502.  
  1503.      Since a fair amount of work can be put into creating your
  1504. puzzles and clues I suggest that you do the following to safeguard
  1505. your puzzles.
  1506.  
  1507. 1)   Exit PUZZLE BUSTER
  1508. 2)   You should be in your PUZZLE BUSTER directory. If not, please
  1509.      go there now. Try typing CD\PUZ and press enter.
  1510. 3)   Place a formatted disk in drive A: and close the door. Not the
  1511.      office door the drive door.
  1512. 4)   Type this    Copy *.puz a:     and press ENTER
  1513. 5)   Type this    Copy *.add a:     and press ENTER
  1514. 6)   Your puzzles and clues are now safely stored on the floppy
  1515.      disk.
  1516. 7)   Mark the disk PUZZLES and put it in a safe place.

  1525. 1)   Try not to have any duplicated words in your puzzle.

  1542. 3)   Try not to have too many blocks in your puzzle. Lots of words
  1543.      is the best (and hardest) way to go.

  1547. While selecting words from Lookup lists, try using words with lots
  1548. of 'R's, 'S's, 'T's, 'L's, 'N's and 'E's in them. They seem to
  1549. match up best with other words in the puzzle.

  1551. SAVE AS YOU CREATE !! My rule of thumb for saving is this:
  1552. As soon as I do something I would hate to re-do, I SAVE.
