  55. Welcome to the third edition of SatScan Satellite Services Chart!
  56. I admit this chart has been long overdue to be released and was
  57. delayed because of several factors.  I recently purchased a
  58. Janiel Stereo Processor and I went through every transponder
  59. looking for audio services.  Those took me quite a while to
  60. document.  While I was going through documenting audio services,
  61. my receiver got zapped and it took about a month to get a
  62. replacement one.  Now that I have gone through the audio
  63. subcarriers, they should be easier to maintain in future issues
  64. and I foresee no delays in getting this chart out every month or
  65. so.  A new feature to this chart is a list of satellite
  66. uplink/downlink frequencies. Thanks go to Michael Kramer for
  67. providing me with a list of frequencies for use in this chart.

  69. Dr. TS Kelso, who regularly posts North American Satellite
  70. orbital elements to the Usenet Rec.Video.Satellite/Homesat
  71. newsgroup, gave me permission to use the inclination stat of the
  72. orbital elements in my SatScan chart.  C-band satellites can have
  73. orbital inclinations of 1-2 degrees and reception on a dish will
  74. still be fine without the need of an elevation adjustment.
  75. Ku-band satellites, however, are not quite as tolerant as C-band
  76. to larger orbital inclinations (2-3 or more degrees) and
  77. adjustments to the elevation on a continual basis are needed to
  78. receive the satellite signal. I thank Dr. Kelso for allowing me
  79. to use part of the orbital elements in this chart.
  80.  
  81. In the immediate future, I hope to have a list of syndication
  82. show feeds as well as Single Channel Per Carrier (SCPC)
  83. transmissions and FM Squared transmissions. I was planning to
  84. utilize the ATIS (Automatic Transponder Identification System)
  85. information in this chart, but I am having trouble with the
  86. circuit that allows my computer to decode the ATIS morse code.
  87. When I get the circuit fixed, I will include the ATIS
  88. information.  If you have any more features you want to see in
  89. this chart, please drop me a note and I'll consider it.

  91. Trees at my dish site do not allow for the viewing of signals
  92. from Galaxy 2, Spacenet 2, and Satcom F2.  I am working on
  93. scrounging up a second dish for those satellites so the problem
  94. may be remedied in the near future.  Also, I am too far south to
  95. receive the Canadian KU-band birds.  I would appreciate someone
  96. charting those satellites for addition to future charts. This
  97. chart features a partial list of services on the above mentioned
  98. satellites.

  133. o/v:  Occasional Video -- Various types of occasional feeds; if a
  134.       primary user is found, I'll change "o/v" to the primary user's
  135.       name.  In this chart, primary users can be mentioned as using an
  136.       transponder on an occasional basis.  Those will be marked by the
  137.       primary user followed by the "o/v" notation.  There will be no
  138.       codes and audio channels for occasional video services without a
  139.       primary user.
  140.  
  141. o/a:  Occasional Audio -- Audio is heard on an occasional
  142.       basis or audio may be present on an occasional basis
  143.  
  144. (none)  I use this to describe a transponder that I have never
  145.         observed video on or a service left (listed in a previous
  146.         SatScan Satellite Services Chart) and I have not seen any
  147.         video since.
  148.  
  149. UA:   Not Available -- This signal is scrambled with a
  150. scrambling system that is unavailable to the home dish owner in
  151. the United States.
  152.  
  153. Videopal:  The General Instruments (R) Videopal order recorder is
  154.            required along with the VC-II or VC-II Plus to order
  155.            pay per view events.
  156.  
  157. VC-II:  The video or the channel is scrambled with the General
  158.         Instruments (R) Videocipher II system.  Most of these VC-
  159.         II scrambled channels are available to the home dish owner
  160.         in the United States via subscription.
  161.  
  162. VC-II Plus:  The video or the channel is scrambled with the
  163.              General Instruments (R) Videocipher II Plus System.
  164.              Most of these VC-II Plus scrambled channels are
  165.              available to the home dish owner in the United
  166.              States via subscription.
  167.  
  168. Oak Orion:  The video or the channel is scrambled with the Oak
  169.             Communications (R) Orion system.  The Oak Orion
  170.             scrambled channels on the Canadian TV satellites are
  171.             not available to the American home dish owner.
  172.             Most of the Oak Orion scrambled channels are available
  173.             to Canadian dish owners via subscription.

  177. BMAC:  The video or the channel is scrambled with the Scientific
  178.        Atlanta (R) BMAC system.  Most of the BMAC channels are
  179.        not available to the home dish owner.
  180.  
  181. LEITCH:  The video or the channel is scrambled with the LEITCH (R)
  182.          system.  The LEITCH scrambled channels are not available
  183.          to the home dish owner.
  184.  
  185. VC-IB:  The video or the channel is scrambled with the General
  186.         Instruments (R) Videocipher 1B system.  These channels are
  187.         not available to the home dish owner.
  188.  
  189. FM2:   The audio is delivered via a method known as FM Squared.
  190.        A simple explanation:  FM Squared signals require a video
  191.        carrier to exist.  FM Squared signals are similar to audio
  192.        subcarriers as the we know it except for the fact that they are
  193.        located below the 5.00 MHz audio subcarrier frequency that a
  194.        normal satellite receiver can tune to.
  195.  
  196. SCPC:  The audio is delivered by a Single Channel Per Carrier
  197.        (SCPC) transmission.  A SCPC transmitted signal is
  198.        transmitted with its own carrier, thus eliminating the need for a
  199.        video carrier to be present to exist. Dozens of SCPC
  200.        signals can be transmitted on a single transponder. - If both
  201.        audio and video are encrypted, the code column will have the
  202.        encryption system used, and no audio channels will be
  203.        listed.
  204.  
  205. ITC:  The service is "In the Clear" or not scrambled.
  206.  
  207. ASC:  Audio Sub-Carrier.  The audio service is delivered by an audio
  208.       sub-carrier.  An audio sub-carrier requires the presence of a
  209.       video carrier to exist.  If you take away the video carrier, the
  210.       audio sub-carrier disappears as well.
  211.  
  212. PAL:  The service is transmitted in the PAL format, rather than NTSC.
  213.  
  214. DAT:  The service is a digital audio transmission.  There is currently
  215.       no way for a home dish owner to receive a DAT service.

  219. - On the satellite uplink/downlink frequency chart, the
  220.   polarization of the transponder can be found in parenthesis in
  221.   the transponder column.
  222.  
  223. - If only the video is encrypted, the code column will have the
  224.   encryption system used with the video, and the audio channel
  225.   column will have the program audio channels.
  226.  
  227. - All channel numbers for C-band satellites are indicated with
  228.   their dial position on a 24 channel analog dial.  All channel
  229.   numbers for Ku-band satellites are indicated with the actual
  230.   satellite manufacturer transponder number.  Please consult the
  231.   frequency list in the header of each Ku-band satellite for a
  232.   downlink frequency for a particular transponder.

  255. So many changes have occured since the last edition of the
  256. SatScan Satellite Services Chart.  Please consult the chart for
  257. service locations.

  259. The National Technology University on GSTAR 1 has now gone to
  260. digital compression with digital video and audio.  I have no
  261. location of the digital compression channel of NTU.
  262.  
  263. Brightside update:  I have spoke with the folks over at
  264. Brightside.  They are still in the process of installing
  265. equipment.  They claim that the equipment is still being checked
  266. through customs.  They expect to be back on the air on June 1 at
  267. all their locations.  The North American location is Anik E1 (C)
  268. /23.
