  23. I. How to "install" Winlite
  24.  
  25.    Windows Lite 2.1 (tm) is simply Windows 3.1 on a floppy disk!
  26.  
  27.    The enclosed batch files, WINLITE?.BAT, will create a full
  28. working version of Windows 3.1 on any 3.5" high density floppy disk. 
  29. There are NO new executable programs, just good ol' Windows 3.1.
  30. The point is to slim Windows down enough to fit on a (compressed)
  31. floppy disk. To create the disk:
  32.  
  33.    Run winlitea.bat if your 3.5" drive is called drive A:
  34.    Run winliteb.bat if your 3.5" drive is called drive B:
  35.  
  36.    Just change to the directory where you unzipped WinLite, and type
  37. the batch file name followed by the full path to your Windows 3.1
  38. directory. 
  39.  
  40.    For example, WINLITEB C:\WIN31 will create a 3.5" WinLite floppy
  41. in drive B: if Windows 3.1 is on your hard disk in the WIN31 directory.
  42.  
  43.    You MUST have a copy of Windows 3.1 installed on your hard disk.
  44.  
  45.    Before running the batch file, make sure you have a completely blank,
  46. formatted 3.5" floppy ready. Then just run the appropriate
  47. batch file as described above. It takes about three to seven minutes
  48. (depending on the speed of your processor), so go get a cup of coffee!
  49. Important: you must have 3 MB free space on your C: drive.
  50.  
  51.    Then type CD \WINLITE and WIN /S. This will start Windows in
  52. standard mode. You should always run in standard mode, since enhanced
  53. mode requires a different set of files on the floppy.
  54.  
  55.    You can erase WinLite from your hard disk whenever you want. If you
  56. use WinLite on someone else's machine you must erase it when you're done,
  57. unless they own a copy a Windows 3.1 themselves.
  58.  
  59.    To reinstall WinLite after erasing it, type A:INSTALLA (or B:INSTALL).
  60. This will copy WinLite to the WinLite directory (called C:\WINLITE) on
  61. your hard disk, and decompress the files. This takes only about ONE 
  62. minute, and is necessary, since Windows 3.1 has gotten too big to fit
  63. on an uncompressed floppy. In other words, WinLite 2.1 is ON the floppy,
  64. but doesn't RUN directly from the floppy (which would be too slow
  65. in any case). Of course, if you can afford the space, you can leave
  66. WinLite on your hard disk as long as you want.

  68.    That's all you really need to know, but please read the 
  69. following before beginning.

  72. II.    Why do I need WinLite? What's it good for?
  73.  
  74.    Once you have run the batch file which creates your floppy,
  75. you can take WinLite to any DOS machine and run Windows, with
  76. Cardfile (and your addresses/phone numbers), Notepad, Clock,
  77. File manager, and many more!
  78.  
  79.    You can easily edit WinLite to add the accessories you like and
  80. remove those you don't use. To save your new version, type A:UPDATEA
  81. (or B:UPDATE). The batch file will recompress your C:\WINLITE
  82. directory and copy it back to the floppy. You only need to do this
  83. occasionally, when you've made significant changes. It takes about
  84. three minutes.

  86.    But rather than overwriting your original floppy, you can make a new
  87. one by copying the UPDATE and INSTALL batch files, along with himem.sys
  88. and pkzip.exe and pkunzip.exe to a blank floppy, and then running UPDATE.

  90.    Specifically, here are some advantages of WinLite:
  91.  
  92. 1. It makes Windows as portable as a 3.5" diskette. You can
  93. easily take your Windows environment anywhere you go.
  94.  
  95.    For example, let's say you're going to give a talk. With WinLite,
  96. you can take the "slides" you created in WRITE on a single disk.
  97. They can include bulleted lists, graphics, spreadsheets, and so forth.
  98. While you're giving the talk, you can even run CLOCK to keep track of
  99. the time.
  100.  
  101. 2. It will teach you more about how Windows works. Which things
  102. are the essentials and which are frills?
  103.  
  104. 3. It allows you to have as many different Windows setups as you
  105. want, all without consuming valuable hard disk space. Just put each
  106. on a separate floppy.
  107.  
  108. 4. It gives you a place to try out new programs before you install
  109. them in your main Windows setup. I recently loaded a MS PowerPoint
  110. demo. It took me about two hours to delete it when I was done. It 
  111. had modified the *.ini files, dropped executable files here and
  112. there, and generally made a mess of things. Has this even happened
  113. to you?!
  114.  
  115. 5. It will encourage you to experiment with Windows more freely.
  116. I'm relucant to take a chance of corrupting my main Windows setup.
  117. With WinLite, you can try anything and instantly (well, almost!)
  118. restore your prior setup from a floppy.
  119.  
  120. 6. If you have a portable computer with limited hard disk space,
  121. WinLite will allow you to run Windows 3.1 when you need it and delete
  122. it when you're done.

  125. III.    Trouble-shooting
  126.  
  127. 1. The batch file says, "I can't find your floppy drive!"
  128.  
  129.    You are probably using the wrong batch file. Use the ones 
  130. ending in "a" and "b" for your A: and B: drives, respectively.
  131.

  133. 2. The batch files says, "WinLite needs to know where your
  134. current copy of Windows 3.1 is stored...".
  135.  
  136.    Give the full path to your Windows 3.1 directory (e.g., C:\WINDOWS).
  137.  
  138.    If you are currently running Windows 3.0 (not 3.1), you need to
  139. use the batch files in WinLite 1.1. Download wlit11.zip from your
  140. favorite bulletin board.
  141.  
  142.  
  143. 3. Error messages about protected mode or extended and expanded memory
  144.  
  145.    To run in standard mode, you must have loaded some version
  146. of himem.sys in your config.sys file. Using some version of
  147. smartdrive, either smartdrv.sys or (better) smartdrv.exe, 
  148. is highly recommended. You are probably doing all this already,
  149. so try out WINLITE first -- you may not need to do anything.

  151.    I've also found that you may have to disable expanded memory
  152. to run Windows in standard mode. (Insert a REM in your config.sys
  153. file where it loads the expanded memory manager, such as EMM386.EXE)
  154.  
  155.    I use "device=c:\win31\himem.sys" in my config.sys file and
  156. "c:\win31\smartdrv.exe 2432 256" in my autoexec.bat file.

  159. 4. You get the message, "Disk full" when running UPDATE.BAT
  160.  
  161.    You have added too many new things. You must delete something of
  162. equal size before adding something new.
  163.  
  164.    Or, the diskette doesn't has full capacity. Under DOS 5.0, you should
  165. use FORMAT /U to avoid wasted space. If the diskette has bad blocks,
  166. use it for something else. WinLite needs as much space as possible!

  169. 5. You get the message, "Disk full" when running INSTALL.BAT
  170.  
  171.    You need about 3 MB free space on your disk to install WinLite 2.1.
  172. Delete some unnecessary files and try again.

  179.    If you have any trouble getting WinLite to run, please write
  180. to me at the above address, describing exactly what you did and
  181. what happened. Include a brief description of your hardware and
  182. any special TSR's or devices. I can't promise to answer all letters,
