  3. Welcome to the Giga Games 2 CDROM.  This CDROM disc contains 4,500
  4. files, almost 500 megabytes of games.  You'll find all the hottest
  5. shareware games here, along with hundreds of educational programs for
  6. children to adults.  Virtual Reality fanatics will want to try
  7. Descent, an awesome 3D flying arcade/action game.

  11. Here is a list of some important files in the root directory.
  12.  
  13. 00_index.txt     A list with descriptions of all the files on this disc.
  14. filename.txt     Complete list of files and their path.
  15. go.bat           Batch file that starts the view program.
  16. readme.txt       The file you're currently reading.
  17. setup.exe        Windows setup program
  18. view.exe         Program to view the index files and select files to unzip.
  19. winview.exe      Program to view the index files for Windows.

  22. docs\            Directory containing Walnut Creek CDROM documentation
  23. dos\             Directory containing all the DOS games.
  24. os2\             Directory containing all the OS/2 games.

  26. win\             Directory containing all the Windows games.
  27. _bbs\            Directory containing support for bulletin board systems.

  31. To use this disc, you will need to uncompress the compressed programs
  32. on the CDROM to your hard disk.  
  33.  
  34. To make browsing the disk easier, we have included the WINVIEW
  35. program for Windows and VIEW for MSDOS in the root directory of the
  36. CDROM.  This program allows you to page through the index files and
  37. then uncompress the program(s) you want, placing them on your hard
  38. drive.

  42. INSTALLATION:
  43.  
  44. The WINVIEW and VIEW programs require no installation as they can run
  45. directly from the disc.  You can also install the programs onto your
  46. hard drive using the SETUP program.  To run the installation:
  47.  
  48.     1)  Start up Windows
  49.  
  50.     2)  Choose RUN from the Program Manager File menu to see the RUN
  51.         dialog box.
  52.  
  53.     3)  In the command line box, type
  54.  
  55.             d:\setup
  56.  
  57.         (If the D: drive is not your CDROM drive, change it to the
  58.         appropriate CDROM drive letter.) 
  59.  
  60.     4)  Click OK to start the installation.

  64. To create an icon for an application you uncompressed from the CDROM,
  65. you have two options:
  66.  
  67. 1)  First select Windows Setup in the Main Group.
  68.     Select Options in the menu bar.  
  69.     Select Set Up Applications.
  70.     Select Ask You to Specify An Application.
  71.     Type the path and name of the program you'd like to install.
  72.  
  73.     Windows setup will copy the program's icon into the Application
  74.     Group and set up the program to run from the icon.
  75.

  77.     For example, to make an permanent icon for boxworld after copying
  78.     it with VIEW you would type:
  79.  
  80.         c:\win3\games\boxworld\boxworld.exe
  81.  
  82.     into the "Specify An Application" box.
  83.  
  84. 2)  Start up File Manager.  Locate the executable program (which
  85.     usually ends in .EXE or .COM) you wish to install.
  86.  
  87.     Drag that program icon to your Applications program group inside
  88.     your Program Manager window.  Release the mouse button.  The icon
  89.     will now be in your Applications window, and you can run the program
  90.     be using that icon.

  94. Although you may own this disk, you do not own the programs recorded
  95. on it.  Many of the programs on this disk are shareware.  You are
  96. free to try each program for a limited amount of time.  If you are
  97. satisfied, and want to continue to use the program, you are required
  98. to register the program by sending a specified amount of money
  99. directly to the author of the program.  In many cases the author will
  100. send you the most up to date version of the program and a printed
  101. manual.  Please check the individual files for specific information.

  103. make discs like this possible.

  107. For Windows programs compiled with Visual Basic, the run time library
  108. is required.  Copy the files vbrun100.dll, vbrun200.dll and
  109. vbrun300.dll in the \VBRUN directory to your Windows system
  110. directory.  (Most likely your Windows system directory is
  111. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.)

  115. Due to the large number of files on this CDROM, Walnut Creek CDROM
  116. cannot possibly attempt to validate the proper operation of the
  117. various programs.  When a program bug is reported, immediate action
  118. is taken to either correct the error or remove the offending program
  119. from the CDROM.  Still, users must understand that all programs are
  120. offered AS IS, and the archive maintainers specifically disclaim any
  121. liability should these programs malfunction or cause damage,
  122. incidental or otherwise.  When testing ANY new software, be certain
  123. that all information stored on disk is backed-up before you start, so
  124. that you can recover if files are damaged or erased.  This is
  125. particularly true if you have a hard disk, in which case malfunctions
  126. can be spectacularly disastrous.
