  7. The Mac-FTP-list lists over 200 mac anonymous ftp sites (some with notes),
  8. over 75 Mac web pages, and contains some instructions on how to use anonymous
  9. ftp and find files as well a format chart showing which programs decompress
  10. and decode which files.  Also there is a section on how to use certain files.

  64. For folks new to ftp
  65. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  66. The first column of stuff in the data below is the site name.  Usually you 
  67. can either type in the URL ftp://sitename/file/pathway/ on a Web browser or
  68. run ftp from a unix shell account and type open and then the site name.  
  69. But some computers don't like the names (or don't have all of them) and 
  70. prefer the next column of stuff, the IP addresses.  If you try either 
  71. method with the IP number and it doesn't bite, it isn't gonna work.
  72. To allow the best chance to connect to a site almost all of HTML version's 
  73. sites have both names and IP# links.  The main exceptions are 'dymatic
  74. addressing' and limited access sites.
  75.  
  76. Most mac ftp sites have encoded their files with BinHex 4.0 which end in 
  77. the suffix ".hqx". To decode these files, you can just download them to 
  78. your mac and use Stuffit Expander to decode and expand them, reguardless 
  79. of whether they are Stuffit (.sit) or Compact Pro (.cpt).  This is much 
  80. better than in the old days when you had to download a file to your mac, 
  81. use Compact Pro or Stuffit to decode it, and THEN, figure which program 
  82. you needed use to decompress it.
  83.  
  84. In days long past one had to have a unix shell account to use FTP.  Today
  85. there are a whole host of options available - from commercial services 
  86. such as CompuServe and AOL to local and national ISPs. In addition there 
  87. are dozens of communication programs for the Macintosh that that make 
  88. using Telnet and FTP much easier now than years ago.  A list of such 
  89. programs can be found at both Joel Klecker's (formally David L.

  93. these programs are also in the subdirectories of /info-mac/comm/ on many 
  94. info-mac mirrors.

  96. On a unix shell account, ftp prompts you for a username and password; you
  97. send "anonymous" as the username, and your email address as the password. 
  98. Most browsers will do this automatically if they have been set up properly.  
  99. For the few that don't or can't try doing your URLs in this manner -
  100. ftp://anonymous:email_address@site.name/  For Mike Gleason email_address 
  101. would be mgleason@cse.unl.edu and for me it would be BruceG6069@aol.com.
  102. I should mention that browsers make poor FTP clients and can generate "This
  103. FTP server does not support passive mode" on the sites with the 'DM' note. 
  104. Also there are a few sites that use non-standard names (with spaces or non-
  105. printable [>ascii 127] characters) which can create problems for both unix
  106. shell accounts and browsers.  It is better to use something like Anarchie or
  107. Fetch for ftp either of which avoids these problems.

  135. Keep in mind that some sites may disenable the anonymous login for a while: 
  136. during certain hours of the day, for maintainance reasons, or because of too
  137. much heavy traffic.  Most will tell you the reason for refusing anonymous
  138. login, but a few will say nothing more than "User anonymous unknown" or
  139. "connection refused". Keep this in mind when a site on this list results in
  140. either of these responses.

  143. Power User Notes:
  144. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  145. If you want to read a file on a remote site, but don't want download it, and
  146. are not using a WWW browser, quit ftp, page the file, then restart ftp, try
  147. "get myfile.txt -" and ftp will dump the file to your terminal.  Also exploit
  148. ftp's pipe and shell abilities, like "get myfile.txt |more" will do the same
  149. as above, except using "more" to page the file.  On the other hand, Web
  150. browsers can read these files on-line without all this hand waving.
  151.  
  152. If you need to know the IP address of an ftp site, a common unix program
  153. called "nslookup" can help.  With some versions, "nslookup ftp.apple.com"
  154. would spit out "130.43.2.3."  Doing the reverse is dependent on how your 
  155. site is set up.  Some sites require reversing the address and using the 
  156. in-addr.arpa domain with the lookup type set to "ANY", while others can 
  157. use the address as written.  There is now a Mac version of this program 
  158. called DNS lookup.
  159.  
  160. Most files you'll get off ftp are in binhex (.hqx) format.  Since almost 
  161. all present modems support V.42bis and MNP5 compression (4:1 and 2:1 
  162. respectivly) it has actually become faster to download them to your 
  163. machine and THEN decode them.  The reason is simple; text files like .hqx,
  164. .uu, and .txt can be compressed allowing the modem to increase throughput 
  165. for these files by 50% to 100%.  Already compressed files like .bin, .sit, 
  166. and .cpt receive little if any benefit from V.42bis and MNP5.   This 
  167. results in .hqx files being downloaded as fast or faster than .bin files.  
  168. This combined with background decoding/decompression (like StuffIt 
  169. Expander) and Web browsers has effectivly rendered downloading .hqx to 
  170. an unix box and decoding it there obsolete.

  215. .sit refers to both 1.5 and dlx. Otherwise a '/' is used {1.5/dlx}.

  230. Other formats
  231. .arj
  232.      PC format common to European sites. Decoded by unArjMac, DeArj, and
  233.      Stuffit Expander for Windows.
  234. .dd
  235.      Disk Doubler {Mac} format. Decoded by DDExpand and DiskDoubler.
  236. .exe
  237.      DOS/Windows executable file (program); also used to create
  238.      self-extracting archives. An .exe file used as a self-extracting
  239.      archive can usually be decompressed with Stuffit Expander w/ DSEE.
  240. .html (.htm)
  241.      WWW document. Used by WWW browsers such as Netscape and lynx.
  242. .image/.img/.ima/
  243.      These are all disk image extensions.  They represent Mac disk image
  244.      (.image/.img), Microsoft Disk Image Utility (.img), and Winimage
  245.      (.ima) formats.  Most are decoded and/or mounted by ShrinkWrap
  246.      <http://www.halcyon.com/shrinkwrap/> but at present the
  247.      Mac .img 6.1 format requires DiskCopy 6.1 or Disk Image Mounter 1.0.1.

  250.      Note that .img is also used as an graphic file extension and

  252. .lzh (related formats - .lha and .lzs)
  253.      old PC/Amiga format, replaced by .arc and .zip; decoded by macunpack,
  254.      MacLHA, LHA Expander 1.0.3, and French KISS 2.1.1.
  255. .pit
  256.      old {~1989} Mac compression format created by PackIt programs, replaced
  257.      by .sit. In general, a program that handles .sit files can decode .pit
  258.      files as well.
  259. .pkg
  260.      AppleLink package format, replaced by .sit. Decoded by all present Mac
  261.      StuffIt programs.
  262. .sea
  263.      A special version of a Mac compression format that decompresses
  264.      itself when opened.  The most common .sea files are Stuffit,
  265.      Compact Pro, and Disk Doubler.  On the PC Stuffit Expander for 
  266.      Windows will expand Stuffit SEA files.
  267.  
  268. .shar
  269.      Unix shell archive. Decoded by Unshar.
  270. .taz
  271.      another name for .tar.Z
  272. .tgz
  273.      another name for .tar.z and .tar.gz {do not confuse with .tar.Z}.
  274. .txt (.abs, .doc)
  275.      ASCII text file. There is a slight differance between ASCII text files 
  276.      of Mac, PCs, and UNIX systems which can cause problems when trying to
  277.      read them. Mac ASCII uses carage returns, PC uses line feeds, and
  278.      UNIX uses both.
  279. .z
  280.      Early {~1993} suffix for Gzip files. Due to confusion with the UNIX
  281.      'compress' suffix {.Z} it was abandoned in favor of the .gz suffix.
  282. .zoo
  283.      old {~1989} PC/Amiga format, replaced by .arc. Decoded by MacZoo and
  284.      MacBooz.
  285.     
  286. CAUTION: While Gzip is aimed at replacing the .Z format, they are 
  287. _different_ unix compression formats, and the suffixes are NOT inchangable.  
  288. Many sites now support on-the-fly translation of these formats; just type 
  289. in the file name minus the .Z or .gz suffix.
  290.  
  291. WARNING: .hqx, .uu, .b64, and .txt files are the ONLY files that can be 
  292. downloaded in ASCII mode; all others must be downloaded in BINARY {IMAGE} 
  293. mode for the file to decompress properly.  This is especially true of 
  294. ".bin" and "unstuffed" files.  Otherwise you will get errors like 
  295. "unreadable file" or "file is corrupt" when you try to decompress them.

  303. Finding files and programs
  304. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  305. If you are looking for a specific mac file or program you will want to use 
  306. one or more of the many databases or search engines available some of which
  307. are listed in the Web section.  Since I only keep track of sites I have no
  308. idea where individual files are located, which is why I have included lists 
  309. of archie sites and Web search engines.  Please note that database 
  310. information is not always up-to-date and files and sites listed may no 
  311. longer exist.
  312.  
  313. Using files
  314. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  315. Here are some tips if you have downloaded a file and are not sure how to open
  316. it.  First, do NOT ask people what program opens the file.  Odds are that no
  317. one will know how to deal with the file.
  318.  
  319. The reason is that DOS's three letter extension allows 26^3 or 17,576 
  320. possible file formats.  The Mac is even more of a nightmare with -two- four
  321. letter tags each one allowing 250^4 or 3,906,250,000 different possible
  322. combinations.  So, on the Mac not only does one have over -3 billion- 
  323. possible formats to choose from but also 3 billion possible -programs- to 
  324. choose from.  Compounding the problem is the fact that certain three letter 
  325. extensions can really be any one of several different formats and in DOS 
  326. people create their own three letter extensions.
  327.  
  328. The best thing to do is to try and see if there is any way to figure out 
  329. what -broad- type of file it is: Word Processor, picture, sound, or movie.
  330.  
  331. Word Processor
  332.      Tex-Edit Plus <http://members.aol.com/tombb/index.html> will read
  333.      most of these out there though some will require Adobe Acrobat
  334.      Reader (.pdf) or a commerical Word Processor such as
  335.      MS Word or WordPerfect.
  336. Pictures
  337.      GraphicConverter (Shareware, $30-$35, /info-mac/gst/grf/,
  338.      http://members.aol.com/lemkesoft/) is one of the most powerful
  339.      shareware graphic programs for the Mac, able to view, create,
  340.      and edit over 77 different graphic formats including .gif,
  341.      .png <http://www.wco.com/~png/>, and .jpeg.  But even it cannot
  342.      view propriety formats such as used by Photoshop or Canvas or
  343.      relatively obsure formats such as .cel or .ecc.

  349. Sound files
  350.      Sound App 2.2.3 (Freeware, /info-mac/gst/snd/) will play most sound
  351.      formats out there including .mod, .wav, .au, and .aiff.
  352. Movie files
  353.      Sparkle 2.4.5 (/info-mac/gst/mov/) for QT and .mov formats; MS
  354.      Internet Explorer for the viewing of most .avi formats.
  355. Other files
  356.      Hopefully there is a document file that tells you what is needed
  357.      otherwise it is pretty much a lost cause.
