  6. Windows 95 Printer Driver - Version 3.0 BETA.  Canon is beta testing the
  7. new driver to ensure the best compatibility with Windows 95 and designed
  8. for Windows 95 applications.

  12. This README file contains information to help you install and use your 
  13. printer driver software with Microsoft Windows 95.  Since this is a BETA
  14. version of the printer driver, no support of the driver is available. If
  15. you have comments about the driver or wish to submit a bur report, please
  16. fill out the form in the WIN95BUG.DOC file included with the drivers.
  17. Additional information and updated printer drivers may be posted on 
  18. CompuServe and Canon's BBS from time to time.

  36. The Canon Bubble Jet Series Printer Driver does not require any additional
  37. system configuration beyond those required to run Windows 95.  However, you
  38. can improve the performance of your Canon printer if you:
  39.  
  40. 1. Increase the amount of RAM memory to more than 8 MB.  Increasing RAM memory
  41.    will result in faster printing and reduce compatibility problems with some
  42.    applications.  As an alternative, you can increase the amount of virtual
  43.    memory to reduce the possibility of "low memory" conditions (although this
  44.    does not improve printing performance).
  45. 2. Allow at least 5 MB of hard disk space on the drive that contains your
  46.    system's TEMP directory.

  49. Removing the Microsoft Mini Driver
  50. ==================================
  51. If you are currently using a Windows 3.1x driver or the Windows 95 Mini
  52. drivers from Microsoft, you will want to remove the old driver before 
  53. installing this driver.  To remove the old driver, use the following 
  54. procedure:
  55.   1. Start Windows 95 on your system.
  56.   2. Click on the "Start" button.
  57.   3. Point to the "Settings" item.
  58.   4. Click on the "Printers" item to display the Printers folder.
  59.   5. Right-click on the Printer to remove.
  60.   6. Click on the "Delete" menu choice.
  61.   7. Click on the "Yes" button.
  62. If Windows 95 asks you if you want to delete all asociated files, click
  63. on the "Yes" button.

  66. Creating Install Disks
  67. ====================== 
  68. Three of the files that you downloaded are:
  69.     BJWIN951.EXE    Self extracting zip file for disk 1
  70.     BJWIN952.EXE    Self extracting zip file for disk 2
  71.     BJWIN953.EXE    Self extracting zip file for disk 3
  72. To create installation diskettes, have three blank, formatted 3.5" 
  73. (1.44MB) diskettes, labeled Canon BJ Series Windows 95 Printer Driver 
  74. Disk 1/3, Disk 2/3 and Disk 3/3, respectively.
  75.   1. Place Disk 1/3 in drive A:

  85. Installing the Printer Driver into Windows 95
  86. ============================================= 
  87. To use this printer driver with software application packages that operate
  88. with Microsoft Windows 95, use the following installation procedure:
  89.   1. Start Windows 95 on your system.
  90.   2. Click on the "Start" button.
  91.   3. Point to the "Settings" item.
  92.   4. Click on the "Printers" item to display the Printers folder.
  93.   5. Double-click on the "Add Printer" icon to start the "Add Printer Wizard".
  94.   6. Click on the "Next" button.
  95.   7. Click on the "Have Disk" button.
  96.   8. Insert diskette #1 into the floppy disk drive of your computer system.
  97.      If the floppy disk drive is drive A, click on the "OK" button and
  98.      continue with the next step.  Otherwise, type the letter name of your
  99.      floppy disk drive (such as "B:") and then click on the "OK" button.
  100.   9. Follow the instructions of the Add Printer Wizard until the installation
  101.      is finished.  An icon for your printer will then appear in the Printers
  102.      folder.

  104. You are now ready to print from any Windows software application packages.
  105. If your printer model can print in color, the driver is automatically set for
  106. printing in color.  Otherwise, the driver is automatically set for grayscale
  107. printing.

  110. Accessing the Printer Properties Dialog Box
  111. ===========================================
  112. The Printer Properties dialog box contains several tabs that allow you to
  113. setup, control and maintain your Canon printer.  To access the Printer
  114. Properties dialog box, use the following procedure:
  115.   1. Click on the "Start" button.
  116.   2. Point to the "Settings" item.
  117.   3. Click on the "Printers" item to display the Printers folder.
  118.   4. Click on the icon for your printer to highlight it.
  119.   5. Click with the right mouse button on the icon, and then click with the
  120.      left mouse button on "Properties".
  121.  
  122. This will display the the Printer Properties dialog box which contains the
  123. following tabs:
  124.   General  - Lets you print a test page and define separator pages
  125.   Details  - Lets you define printer port assignments and spooler settings
  126.   Paper    - Lets you select paper size, orientation, media type and paper feed
  127.   Graphics - Lets you select print quality and color/monochrome mode
  128.   Setting  - Lets you enable or disable the Print Set-up Analyzer and Cartridge
  129.              Notification, and save/restore all driver settings
  130.   Control  - Lets you perform setup & maintenance functions (only for certain
  131.              printer models)
  132.   Visual Guide - Lets you launch the On-line Guide software (if it is installed)

  134. You can also display the Printer Properties dialog box from within a software
  135. application by clicking on the Print item from the File menu, and then clicking
  136. on the Properties button.  In other applications, you can click on the Printer
  137. Setup item from the File menu and then click on the Setup button.  However, the
  138. General and Details tabs are not available in this mode.

  141. Accessing Help Information
  142. ==========================
  143. From the Printer Properties dialog box, you can click on the "Help" button to
  144. display additional information about every feature and option in the Canon
  145. printer driver.  You can also use the Windows 95 "What's This?" method, by
  146. using the right-mouse button to click on any item for information about that
  147. item and its operation.  Alternatively, you can click on the question-mark (?)
  148. symbol in the upper right corner of each dialog box, and then click on any 
  149. item to display help for that item.  In addition, a brief one-line message
  150. appears near the bottom of each tab to display information about each group
  151. of selections as you move your mouse cursor over them.

  154. Using the Print Set-up Analyzer
  155. ===============================
  156. This printer driver includes an automatic "Print Set-up Analyzer" to help you
  157. use your printer more efficiently.  The Print Set-up Analyzer identifies any
  158. inconsistencies in your setup selections, and allows you to correct them if 
  159. you wish.  By default, the Print Set-up Analyzer is enabled. You can disable
  160. it in the Setting tab of the Printer Properties dialog box.

  163. Hints for Color Printing
  164. ========================
  165. If your printer is capable of printing in color and uses interchangeable ink
  166. cartridges, be sure that a color ink cartridge is installed in the printer.
  167. You should also select the appropriate Print Model from the Graphics tab in
  168. the Printer Properties dialog box.
  169.  
  170. 1. Select the "Quick Color" or "Full Color" icon from the Color Model group
  171.    on the Graphics tab.  The "Quick Color" mode allows you to generate good
  172.    quality color output with fast performance.  The "Full Color" mode allows
  173.    you to print the full color spectrum with somewhat slower performance and
  174.    control other printing features.
  175. 2. If you selected the "Full Color" icon, select the appropriate Print Model:
  176.    - Automatic selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum print quality
  177.      for all types of images
  178.    - Graphics and Text selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum print
  179.      print quality for solid text and business graphics, with the
  180.      emphasis on enhancing color saturation
  181.    - Photo selects the halftoning method to produce optimum print quality for
  182.      scanned photographs or bitmapped images 
  183.    - Custom offers more advanced control over halftoning patterns, bit depth,
  184.      color adjustment and intensity.  These advanced options are not intended
  185.      for novice users of color printers.

  188. Hints for Monochrome Printing
  189. =============================
  190. All Canon bubble-jet printer models are capable of printing in monochrome mode.
  191. If your printer is also capable of printing in color and uses interchangeable
  192. ink cartridges, you should install a black ink cartridge for better printing
  193. efficiency.  Then use the following procedure on your computer system:
  194.  
  195. 1. If you have a color printer, select the "Monochrome" icon from the Color
  196.    Model group on the Graphics tab (this selection is not available for 
  197.    monochrome-only printer models).
  198. 2. Select the appropriate Print Model:
  199.    - Automatic selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum print quality
  200.      for all types of images
  201.    - Graphics and Text selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum print
  202.      print quality for solid text and business graphics, with the
  203.      emphasis on enhancing color saturation

  211. For Windows 3.0, 3.1 and 3.11
  212. =============================
  213. This printer driver does not support Windows versions 3.0, 3.1 and 3.11.
  214. Please contact your local Canon company to obtain a driver for these versions
  215. of Windows.

  218. Cautions, Limitations and Restrictions
  219. =======================================
  220. 1. If your printer is capable of printing in color, do not attempt to print
  221.    in "Color" mode when a black ink cartridge is installed in your printer.
  222.    The results will be unpredictable.
  223.  
  224. 2. A known problem in Corel Mosaic Version 5.0 may cause incomplete printed
  225.    output.  Please contact Corel Corporation for an update.
  226.  
  227. 3. Color Advisor is not enabled in this BETA version of the printer driver.
  228.    The production release of this driver will include Color Advisor.  If you 
  229.    need to use Color Advisor, please re-install your Windows 3.1x printer drivers.
