  1. Your  subscription to  the  SOMELIST-L list  (SOME_SUBJECT) has  been
  2. accepted.

  4. Please  save this  message  for future  reference, especially  if  you are  not
  5. familiar with LISTSERVER. This might look like  a waste of disk space now, but in
  6. 6 months you will be glad you  saved this information when you realize that you
  7. cannot  remember what  are the  lists you  are subscribed  to, or  what is  the
  8. command to  leave the list to  avoid filling up  your mailbox while you  are on
  9. vacations.  In fact,  you  should create  a new  mail  folder for  subscription
  10. confirmation messages  like this one, and  for the "welcome messages"  from the
  11. list owners that you will occasionally receive after subscribing to a new list.

  13. To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send
  14. mail  to SOMELIST-L@SOMENODE.  This is  called "sending  mail to  the list",
  15. because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERVER makes copies for all the
  16. people  who  have subscribed.  This  address  (SOMELIST-L@SOMENODE) is  also
  17. called the  "list address".  You must  never try  to send  any command  to that
  18. address, as it would be distributed to  all the people who have subscribed. All
  19. commands  must be  sent to  the "LISTSERVER  address", LISTSERVER@SOMENODE.
  20. It is  very  important to  understand the  difference
  21. between the two, but fortunately it is not complicated. The LISTSERVER address is
  22. like a  FAX number, and the  list address is like  a normal phone line.  If you
  23. make your  FAX call someone's  regular phone number by  mistake, it will  be an
  24. unpleasant experience for him but you  will probably be excused the first time.
  25. If you  do it regularly,  however, he  will probably get  upset and send  you a
  26. nasty complaint.  It is the same  with mailing lists, with  the difference that
  27. you are calling hundreds or thousands of people at the same time, so a lot more
  28. people get annoyed if you use the wrong number.

  30. You may leave the  list at any time by sending a  "UNSUBSCRIBE SOMELIST-L" command to
  31. LISTSERVER@SOMENODE. You can also  tell LISTSERVER
  32. how you want it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. If you
  33. do not trust the system, send a  "SET SOMELIST-L REPRO" command and LISTSERVER will
  34. send you a copy of your own messages,  so that you can see that the message was
  35. distributed and did not get damaged on the way. After a while you may find that
  36. this is  getting annoying, especially  if your mail  program does not  tell you
  37. that the message is from you when it informs you that new mail has arrived from
  38. SOMELIST-L. If you send a "SET  SOMELIST-L ACK NOREPRO" command, LISTSERVER will mail
  39. you a short acknowledgement instead, which  will look different in your mailbox
  40. directory. With  most mail programs you  will know immediately that  this is an
  41. acknowledgement you can read later.  Finally, you can turn off acknowledgements
  42. completely with "SET SOMELIST-L NOACK NOREPRO".

  44. Please note  that it is presently  possible for other people  to determine that
  45. you are signed  up to the list  through the use of the  "REVIEW" command, which
  46. returns the e-mail address and name of  all the subscribers. If you do not want
  47. your name to be visible, just issue a "SET SOMELIST-L CONCEAL" command.
