WNMSGATE
========
This VB 3 program allows you to connect your MS-Mail (WFW) or standard
MS-Mail postoffice to the Internet. It does this via a machine on which the
WinNET software and a modem is installed. Incoming mail is routed to
ms_mail_user@site.win-uk.net if there is no user at your Post Office of
this name then mail is routed to the default account setup during the
install procedure. Outgoing mail is sent to the MS-Mail user INTERNET
(which needs to be setup on your post office) and the subject line
contains the Internet email address ie alanj@ibmpcug.co.uk
(please note when replying that RE: is removed by WNMSGATE automatically
as is FW: on forwarded messages!). The first line of the message is taken
as the subject or a line that starts Subject: (in the first 10 lines of
message).
Attached files can be sent outbound through the gateway and are encoded
with UUENCODE on the way through multiple attachments appear in separate
mail messages. Incoming UUENCODED files are placed as single attachments
in the incoming MS-MAIL message. As are large files which are included with
the extension TXT (you may want to use the file manager to Associate this
with Windows Write or another text editor).
Version 0.95 included an improved address parser and now copes with multiple
addresses and cc addresses. And tries to be fail safe by sending undeliverable
mail to the admin account you set up. 0.96 continues this and deals
with unusual mail messages. It also includes new loging and options for
checking mail in different manners on the ms-mail post office. The scheduler
now seems to work in 0.97 along with further parsing and bouce identification
improvements. 0.98 includes a new scheduler and some additional functionality
after error reports from users it appears to be resonably stable and has
been running on our 3.2 Postoffice for some time.
Good luck and please send you reports to alanj@ibmpcug.co.uk
Installation
============
Use the WinNET Mail Binary Decode to decode the WNMSGATE.ZIP
attached file. Then unzip the file in the WNMAIL directory.
[pkunzip wnmsgate.zip]
Set up an MS-Mail user called INTERNET Select a password ie
INTERNET to allow for automatic login. Ensure that you have modified the
options so that NO copies of outgoing mail are saved in the Sent
Mail folder and that Addresses are NOT placed in the personal address
book.
It is very important to use the Mail Options Server screen to change
from local storage to Post Office Storage of mail. Do this before
proceedding with installation at the machine that will run WNMSGATE.
Ensure that the WNMSGATE.EXE program is in the \WNMAIL directory.
MSMAPI.VBX and CMDIALOG.VBX will be placed in the \WNMAIL directory
these can be moved to the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
Use the Windows File New command to add WNMSGATE.EXE to the WinNET Programs
Group (ie wnmsgate C:\WNMAIL\WNMSGATE.EXE C:\WNMAIL).
Run WNMSGATE.EXE
The program will now ask you to setup some information for it this includes:
a) The password for the INTERNET MS-Mail account.
The default / admin account name to send undeliverable mail.
b) The frequency with which it should check the post office and WinNET
incoming spool directory for new mail to be passed. [defaults 10 mins]
c) The hours that the WinNET Server should be called. This program is designed
to be run continuously and to replace the WinNET Scheduler.
d) The format of the date in your coutry (this is important the default is
DD/MM/YY).
e) Other option switches include:
Verbose log files.
Call outgoing when there are more than x files pending (0 is call only
when times to do so)
Reload spooler. MS-Mail delivers mail to local mail boxes on an intreesting
cycle if you prefer you can get the server to relogin into the post office
before processing mail allowing you to set the system to read new mail
before running and sorting mail.
Logon to MS-Mail ONLY when running gateway, otherwise allow machine to
be used by local user (your comments on this option would be appriciated)
Click on save and the program is running.
Notes:
YOU MUST LOGIN as INTERNET for the System to WORK!!!!! at the
time you start. You cannot run Mail or Schedule while the program
is running. 0.96 Automatically logs in as Internet if you have given
this account a password and also given the program the password.
WNMSGATE defaults to run minimised but you can restore it to see what is
going on and to manually run the program parts (and also to delete
WinNET Mail if the gateway is running properly).
To send mail through the gateway Address it to INTERNET and place the
Internet address in the Subject: field. The first line of text is assumed
to be the subject unless a subsequent one (in the first 10 lines) contains
Subject: Followed by the subject you require. Please note this option is
needed for mail sent from the MS-DOS version of MS-MAIL when a file is
attached.
Incoming large files are placed into attachments please ensure that
you have associated TXT extension to Windows Write or another
text processor. [While running the file manager to File Assiciate TXT
to application Windows Write (or other text processor or word processor].
Good luck and please let me know how you get on.
Regards
ALan Jay

Usage Notes:
Currently incoming files are not deleted but there is an option within
WNMSGATE to delete the mail manually. Also there is an option to allow
you to read the mail using WinNET itself and then read/delete etc. These
two options and the state of the incoming mail after processing may well
change depending on your comments.
Remember that WinNET currently CANNOT be run on a network drive so
please run WinNET \WNMAIL directory on the local drive and the
machine with the Modem.
Please note if you switch on verbose loggin on the Setup screen it will
place log details in the file WNMSGATE.LOG in the \wnmail directory.
Please note that you can manually run the UUCICO at any time.
