  1. Welcome to WindEx: Windows Extreme!
  2. ===================================
  3. WindEx is a replacement shell for Windows 3.1 that adds great
  4. features like drag-n-drop, desktop file access, easy
  5. file management, and more!

  8. To Install
  9. ----------
  10. Copy WINDEX.EXE and WINDEX.HLP to your Windows directory.
  11. WindEx can be run from File Manager, Program Manager, or as the
  12. Windows shell.  To install WindEx as the Windows shell, follow
  13. these steps:
  14.  
  15.      1-Copy the WindEx files to the Windows directory.
  16.      2-Using a text editor, open SYSTEM.INI from the Windows
  17.      directory and find the line "shell=" in the [boot] section.
  18.      3-Change the current entry (probably PROGMAN.EXE) to the
  19.      path and filename for WindEx.
  20.     For example:  shell=C:\WINDOWS\WINDEX.EXE
  21.      4-Save the file and restart Windows.

  24. To Register
  25. -----------
  26. WindEx is considered Shareware and may be freely distributed
  27. in its original archived format.  If, after a 15 day examination,
  28. you find that you would like to continue using it, send $15.00 (US)
  29. ($5.00 to upgrade) per copy to the following address:

  36. After registering WindEx, you will be sent an official licence
  37. number to be entered on the About dialog.  Once this is done,
  38. all functionality of WindEx will be activated.  Also, registering
  39. entitles you to free maintanance releases and discounted upgrades.

  42. Feature and Enhancement Requests
  43. --------------------------------
  44. If WindEx is lacking a feature that you would like to see, or if
  45. you would like WindEx to perform in a way that better suits your
  46. needs, please send in any suggestions you can think of.  We will
  47. consider all reasonable requests.

  50. the property of the WindEx team.  No compensation can be given.

  53. To Report a Problem With WindEx
  54. -------------------------------
  55. Every attempt has been made to find the problems with the
  56. functionality of the WindEx program. However, it is nearly
  57. impossible to find all "bugs" during the development of
  58. computer software in a reasonable time frame.  WindEx is
  59. distributed with no warranties or guaranties of any kind, and
  60. the development and testing team for WindEx will not be
  61. responsible for any loss of data or damage to equipment
  62. resulting from the use of or inability to use WINDEX.EXE or
  63. WINDEX.HLP.  If you do find a problem while using the WindEx
  64. program or help file, please fill out information for the items 
  65. found on the form below and mail it to the address shown above.
  66. Any advice or opinions are welcome and may also be mailed using
  67. the information shown on the included form.

  72. 1. Moved settings items from the pop-up menus to the new 
  73.    Preferences dialog.

  75. 2. Added the option for Auto Close Parent.

  77. 3. Added options for changing window colors.

  79. 4. Added Small Buttons option for DeskFiles.

  81. 5. Added the option to specify a window background pattern.

  83. 6. Added the option to display a trashcan.  The trash can be re-
  84.    cycled manually or every specified number of days.

  102.     off-screen (i.e. after changing screen resolution).

  104. 13. Memory for selected icons is now freed when closing a window.

  106. 14. The current directory is now changed to match the location of
  107.     the application being executed.

  109. 15. Improved window positioning.

  111. 16. COM, BAT, and font files now display with an appropriate icon.

  114. Changes in 1.0b
  115. ---------------
  116. 1.  Fixed directory verification problem.  This caused problems
  117.     when copying files to certain directories.
  118.  
  119. 2.  A DeskFile's caption would always revert to the filename
  120.     and/or path when initially loaded.  This would, in some
  121.     cases, prevent you from removing the DeskFile.
  122.  
  123. 3.  Improved some of the icon images.  Each drive is now rep-
  124.     resented by an icon for its type (Floppy, HD, CD ROM, etc.).
  125.  
  126. 4.  Each subdirectory now has a parent directory icon.
  127.  
  128. 5.  Fixed a problem with dropping files on DeskFiles from File
  129.     Manager.
  130.  
  131. 6.  The entire directory is no longer re-read when making changes
  132.     to it.  This speeds things up considerably when doing file op-
  133.     erations.
  134.  
  135. 7.  Closing the main WindEx window will now exit WindEx rather than
  136.     minimize the window.
  137.  
  138. 8.  The sort options are now accessed by right clicking on a window's
  139.     caption or other non-client area.
  140.  
  141. 9.  Added an option to allow you to change file attributes.
  142.  
  143. 10. Added an option to show hidden files.
  144.  
  145. 11. When sorting by extension, files without extensions will now
  146.     appear first.
  147.  
  148. 12. Fixed a select problem when the window was sized very small.
  149.  
  150. 13. You can now click on an icon's text to select it.
  151.  
  152. 14. Icon and Caption text is now lowercase for readability and con-
  153.     sistance with other Windows applications.
  154.  
  155. 15. Holding down Ctrl and Shift while dragging an icon will now
  156.     scroll the window.
  157.  
  158. 16. Adding 3DWindows=NO to the [options] section of WINDEX.INI will
  159.     remove the 3D highlights from all WindEx windows.  This may
  160.     produce a noticeable speed increase on slower machines.
  161.  
  162. 17. All DeskFiles and their captions no longer appear in the Alt-Tab
  163.     list.
  164.  
  165. 18. You will no longer recieve an error when changing just the case of
  166.     a DeskFile's caption text.
  167.  
  168. 19. Ctrl-P executes CONTROL.EXE, Ctrl-S executes SETUP.EXE, Ctrl-F
  169.     executes WINFILE.EXE, Ctrl-C executes CALC.EXE and Ctrl-N exe-
  170.     cutes NOTEPAD.EXE.

  172. 20. Dropping a file on a disk DeskFile would copy it to the wrong
  173.     directory.

  175. 21. The directory list is no longer reset to the top after performing
  176.     disk operations.

  193.     large path.
