This looks to me like a local configuration problem with the mailer.
Apparently it can't create the mail queue file (as opposed to the mail
spool file). It looks like some sort of permissions problem maybe.
You might try configuring uqwk to use a different mailer, like elm,
maybe. Change the definition of MAILER_PATH in uqwk.h and re-make uqwk.

If email is all you're interested in, and your internet system is
a un*x or vms box (or even something else), check out RFD Mail. This is a
windows offline mail reader/composer which uses user-writable scripts to
interface to dialup mail services. It comes packaged with un*x and vms
scripts, which are typically very easy to tweak for various systems. You do
not need POP or UQWK on the system, only the standard mail program and a file
transfer command (sz/rz work just fine). It can be anon-ftp'ed from
world.std.com:/src/pc/email/rfdmail.zip, and the shareware registration
fee is only $29.95.

I just picked up a copy from oak.oakland.edu in pub/msdos/offline I
think (well there may be some nodes between there but once you get
there you can find it). The latest version is 0.57 which alas has a
few annoying bugs in it.

YOu cannot as far as I am aware. Also what I find annoying is if you
do a search and find something, if you repeat the search it does not
skip the entry already found but just stays there. You have to move
the cursor one entry down and restart the search.

In the uqwk man page the -Bmaxblocks option is documented. maxblocks
is the number of 128 byte blocks used to limit the size of packets of
messages. The default is usually 4000 blocks (about 1/2 MB). You can
either set this to a larger number or put in 0. The 0 will turn this
feature off and there will be no limit to the size of the packets
generated.
Example: uqwk +n +L -B0

Is there anything out there to allow the offline reading of news on a
macintosh? Ideally, this would be capable of running on a powerbook.
Thanks.

Anssi, check your setup for where you are pointing uqwk to look for
the news. The ZipNews packet is not being properly assembled if you
are coming up with a 0-length .nws file.
Also, I wanted to mention to you and others who might be interested in a
bug fix release for int'l charcacter set handling (and a few enhancements),
you should try to get znr92xf.zip. You may obtain it via anon FTP from
ftp.gte.com: /pub/incoming/znr92xf.zip OR /pub/zipnews/znr92xf.zip.
It is also available to first-time callers via modem to my BBS.
(The latest wide-area beta release is still znr092x.zip, having no
capability for international character sets -- ISO-8859/1 compatibility,
etc.)

Hi all:
Although not given to reviews, I would like to offer a positive vote for
robomail. For a small evaluation fee, you get a product that really
manages your mail. I like the database approach that Parsons TEchnology
has applied. Anyone looking for a simple and complex offliner could not
do better. Future versions will support news reading also.
On a different note, has anyone in netland heard of a offliner called
Cybermail or something like that? It lists for almost 180.00 and
promises a windows environment for dial up access. No small shareware
registration price, eh? It advertises to dial up your unix provider,
extract both mail and news, allow GUI FTP and TELNET. Anybody know of a
qwk compatible mailreader in sharewareland that does these things?
Imagine that - a Windows GUI for the dial up masses. Kinda hefty cost
for this miserly human being, though BG :)

Sure, Helldiver.
It's well designed, powerful, efficient, and has a very good
interface. About the only problems I've encountered with it are lack of
word wrap (or the ability to define your own editor instead of the standard
one) and an inability to delete over 100 email messages at a time, neither of
which is a major problem.

Hello,
QUESTION 1:
Have you found a simple way to use USENET incompatible readers such
as robomail so that headers aren't truncated? I would like to try
robomail, but won't because I *assume* that my follow up posts to a
thread will start a new thread because the header gets truncated.
AM I WRONG?
[I'm glad that people ask and answer questions on USENET with these
great BBS offline reader products. But I get irritated when an
important follow up poster creates a new thread because he/she doesn't
use a USENET compatible reader. I don't think new users should use
these USENET incompatible newsreaders if they can help it. They
should use Zipnews, Unor, Yarn or some other compatible reader. I
understand there's only so much time in a day and if you already use
an incompatible reader like robomail great. EVENTUALLY they may add
USENET compatibility.]
QUESTION 2:
Can you use robomail to export your incoming USENET articles into
Dbase or Paradox? Yarn can't do that.
CyberDesk Comments:
I agree that CyberDesk pricing policy means that many internet users
won't even consider it, since they already have a communication program
and offline reader. Later on when other programs like "Internet In a
Box" become available (in book stores?) people who want the Cyberdesk
like capabilities will buy that product or write their own
communication script files instead of buying a product they can't see
demonstrated or read an item by item comparison.
Personally I want some of the Cyberdesk like capabilities and will
consider purchasing a different communications program if it had a
better script language than procomm plus 2.01 (which doesn't have a
screen painter so I can easily create menus and dialog boxes). So when
I add that $100 plus to the cost of Yarn 1.00 or some other offline
reader I come up to the same price. Therefore the price isn't
unreasonable and I would consider purchasing it for myself or others
AFTER I'VE READ A SERIOUS REVIEW. But for the time being I'm looking
into using MULTI-EDIT Communications Module from American Cybernetics,
Inc. to give me some of the Cyberdesk like capabilities (I assume they
will add a Windows version in April).
IMO Cyberdesk is a very important program because it points out that
users can automate many of their tasks with dos or windows scripting
language. However, IMO the pricing strategy is aimed at Corporations
that buy multiple copies/licenses and not the average Internet USER.

I think you're supposed to specify which directory you would like
your replies to be zipped into. This is in your config file under
\USER\yarn
eg: my config file is set to d:\upload. This directory must
pre-exist or be created by you.
# yarn configuration file
# Lines in this file beginning with # are comments.
# Lines that end with \ are continued on the next line.
[snip snip snip for brevity]
# editor program
editor=c:\util\qedit\q.exe
# SOUP reply packet containing outgoing messages
reply=d:\upload\up
# compress program
compress=c:\util\pk\pkzip -m %f %d\*.*
# uncompress program
uncompress=c:\util\pk\pkunzip -o %f %d
[snip again]
With regards to the manual, I will agree that it *perhaps* could
use some clearing up...
Regards,
Graham

Incidently, Why does the selection mode only work for QWK packets ?
(Or am I just having problems again ? I haven't had any luck using -U
or -E with SOUP mode).
Thanks

Hello. I now have Yarn setup on my system. However, I am a blind user
and would like to have it be able to write the articles out to bios.
Tracking is pretty good already. Any wishes to have a speech friendly
option? It doesn't look like it would be that difficult. 73

Yarn is a suite of programs used to store and read USENET news and mail
offline. The supported platforms are MS-DOS character mode and OS/2 2.x
character mode.
In this release, some command keys in the reader have been rearranged to
be more consistent across different command levels. The command keys more
closely resemble the UNIX tin news reader commands. I also fixed a bug
in which no output was visible from the spell check program.
The MS-DOS version has been uploaded to
oak.oakland.edu:/pub/msdos/offline/yarn-058.zip
(and SimTel mirror sites).
The OS/2 2.x version has been uploaded to
ftp-os2.cdrom.com:/pub/os2/incoming/yrn2-058.zip
and will be moved to the /pub/os2/2_x/bbs directory.

Hi, Darrell. If you press "w", a pop-up window asks where you want the
current message to be written. You can tell it PRN or LPT1 instead of
using a file name. I guess the other BIOS devices such as COM ports
would work as well.
