Nazka is located on the southern coast of Peru where Nazka culture flourished from around 200 BC until AD 600.
The area is an almost rainless desert region broken by rivers from the Andean highlands to the east. What remains of Nazka ceramics were quite finely decorated with colorful stylized animals, plants, and human figures. Goldworking was used frequently to form masks attached to cloth-wrapped mummies.
Animal motifs can be found on ceramics, textiles, and gold as well as executed as gigantic ground drawings like the Nazka Lines.
Not much is known about their social structure or economy. Their food was produced by irrigating the fertile valley, and contacts were maintained with other Andean regions.
