The best startegy when taking on any ship is to get most of your guns lined up to hit the enemey. When firing your guns, you have three options, single fire, stagger fire, or salvo fire. I recommend that until you have a firm range on the enemy vessel, to start with single fire. This will give you the best approximate range for your guns. Once you have the range down, then you should open up on full salvo. Other things you need to learn are 1 "Crossing the 'T'", and forming a "Battle Line" with your ships. Since some ships you will be fighting are faster than your ship, you will learn to use strategy to bring i your guns into play. Probably the most important thing to remember is that your guns have a 'Kill' zone. The online help will show you at what ranges your guns offer the best
