Amiga in Malta.
---------------
Computers in Malta are very popular,
mostly as a means to play games with,
and so with the introduction of the
Amiga 2 years ago, many people have
opted for this machine which, when
considered from the "Games Machine"
aspect, won't let you down.
Back in the old days the ZX Spectrum
was the most popular down here, but soon
the C64 caught up and there are now
very few proud Spectrum owners. But the
C64 still sells a lot to those people
who cannot afford to buy an Amiga. The
prices of computer hardware (and
everything else,if it matters) are very
high. A basic A500 + 1084 system costs
about 750 sterling. But software is very
cheap ..... well at least everyone gets
software for cheap. Pirated software,of
course.Very few people have the guts to
sell original Amiga software,since it's
not illegal to copy software.Till now !
Yep, down here things are moving too
with regards to software and video
piracy. In Malta there is only 1 shop
who sells/rents original videos. The
rest of the video rental shops(hundreds
of them) rent copies, and they do not
have even one original version.Recently
some important (?) people have made a
meeting to discuss how the copyright
laws should be changed. That's not nice
for us,but perhaps this would eliminate
lots of lamers around. Our laws tend to
be modelled on other european countries
mostly England, so if piracy was to be
enforced in England, down here they
would start to think about it too.
As already said, almost all the Amiga
owners just play games. One cannot say
much about Amiga groups in Malta.
Besides PHAZE 101(which were previously
101 - The Maltese Hackers) there aren't
much freaks. Some guys just have fun by
changing other people's scrolltexts
(including our own) but I don't
consider such people to be freaks. (It
would be better not to call them
anything at all if I do not want to put
any obscene words). Recently we had to
expand (that's why we changed name) and
we had to find members from other
countries (after removing the useless
