  5. POSTSCRIPT INSTALLATION
  6. This new font includes matched .PFB and .PFM files. These two should
  7. be all you will need to use the font in virtually all of your
  8. Windowsapplications which can specify typefaces. An .AFM file is included,
  9. but you probably will not need it for your installation. The rest
  10. of this file includes:

  14. --      Information about our rights and obligations

  17. FONT INSTALLATION USING ATM
  18.  
  19. Run ATMCNTL.EXE (or click your appropriate icon) to add the new fonts.
  20. Follow ATM instructions or check your manual. When finished, please
  21. note that you'll have to exit Windows and return to enable access
  22. to the new fonts.
  23.  
  24. If you use ATM, you may have to manually edit the entry in your WIN.INI
  25. file so that your printer will download your new font whenever it's
  26. called for. If you get Courier instead of the new font, then your
  27. printer probably didn't download the file. To fix the problem, add
  28. the font's .PFB file path and name to the WIN.INI softfont entry
  29. line as in the following example:
  30.          softfont42=c:\your-pfm-path\mirisch.pfm,C:\YOUR-PFB-PATH\MIRISCH.PFB
  31.  
  32. The comma and all-caps section is what you'll have to add. (It's
  33. not case-sensitive.) The first half of the entry should have already
  34. been made by ATM. If your listing looks like this and you still get
  35. Courier on your printer, then the problem is something else.

  38. FONT INSTALLATION MANUALLY
  39.  
  40. This is the method I use because I like to know exactly what's being
  41. done and that it WAS done.
  42.  
  43. Using the new font "Mirisch":
  44.  
  45. 1.      Locate the directory that has all of your existing .PFM files
  46. and copy the new .PFM file to that directory. Locate your .PFB files
  47. and copy the new .PFB there.
  48.  
  49. 2.      A note about editing ".INI" files:  When manually changing any
  50. Windows software xxx.INI file, you should first make a backup copy
  51. of the file in case the one you create has some problem. I also suggest
  52. that you name the backup something like xxx.BAC or xxx.ORG and keep
  53. it in the same directory. Many programs have standardized on a backup
  54. file extender of ".BAK" -- if you fall into the habit of using that
  55. one in manual backups which you make, one of these days you may have
  56. a needed backup over-written by some installation program or editor
  57. that also uses ".BAK" for its extender. After you've made a backup
  58. copy of the .INI file, load the working copy into your favorite editor
  59. for the new changes.

  61. 3.      In your Windows directory (probably), locate and edit ATM.INI
  62. under [Fonts]:
  63.  
  64.         Mirisch=c:\your-pfm-path\mirisch.pfm,c:\your-pfb-path\mirisch.pfb
  65.  
  66. The name used before the = sign is case-sensitive; the filenames
  67. after the equal sign are not. Some fonts use upper and lower case
  68. in their names. Naturally you need to substitute your own path to
  69. the files where it indicates "your-...-path."
  70.  
  71. 4.      In your Windows directory, edit WIN.INI under [PostScript,LPT1]
  72. and/or any other section that has a complete listing of your fonts
  73. (for instance, if you have a second printer using the fonts). You
  74. need to increment the softfonts number by 1 for each new font added,
  75. per the following example:
  76.  
  77.         If your listing reads:
  78.          softfonts=41
  79.         then change it to
  80.          softfonts=42
  81.         Then go down past the last current listing (i.e. softfont41=xxxx)
  82.         And add the following line
  83.          softfont42=c:\your-pfm-path\mirisch.pfm,c:\your-pfb-path\mirisch.pfb

  85. Leave off the comma and .pfb portion if you don't want the font automatically
  86. downloaded whenever it's called for. You will then have to manually
  87. download that font or else it will print in the Courier font. (You
  88. might do this if it's a font you use a lot; you set up a routine
  89. to manually download it into your printer's "permanent" memory at
  90. the start of a session; whenever that font is asked for, Windows
  91. doesn't download it because the lack of a .pfb portion of the font
  92. entry tells Windows that it's already in the printer.)

  94. 5.      You must go from Windows to DOS and then back for changes to WIN.INI
  95. and ATM.INI to take effect. If you don't, you won't see the new fonts
  96. listed as being available from your applications.
  97.  
  98. 6.      Depending on the application used, you may have to "refresh" the
  99. list of fonts available with the current printer selected. Sometimes
  100. just re-selecting your printer will update a font list that was not
  101. automatically updated. See your software's manual for individual
  102. commands that may be necessary to refresh a font list.

  105. YOUR RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS
  106.  
  107. The only shareware fee or obligation you pay to use this font is
  108. your having had to download the archived package with my font promotion
  109. information files attached. For having downloaded and read the files,
  110. you get to use this new font for free forever.
  111.  
  112. You have unlimited rights to use this font in any form your software
  113. will use it ... except as another font file. You may not do anything
  114. with the font file itself except install it, make backup copies,
  115. and let your software use it to format and create characters. You
  116. may not convert the font to another format and distribute it.
  117.  
  118. Copies of the complete archived file, as you received it, may be
  119. posted on bulletin boards.

  124. This font is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but
  125. without any express warranty including even the implied warranty
  126. of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

  128. I retain ownership of the creation of this font and rights of distribution
  129. of this font in any form.

  131. Adding new fonts generally presents no bug or compatibility problems
  132. that haven't already been solved when you first installed another
  133. font. I know you don't expect an 800 number or 24-hour hotline, but
  134. I'd be happy to respond to your messages, compliments or general
  135. b.s. posted on CompuServe (72327,1702) or America OnLine (ThomasH53).
