Q: |
What is SSI and how do I
know if I have it? |
A: |
SSI stands for
Server-Side-Includes. They are special comment
tags which will be parsed by the server your site
uses. To let Net-Trak track referers, you have to
tell them to the script. This is done via SSI.
To see if you server supports SSI, make a new
file in your web-page directory and name it
'test.shtml' (yes, shtml, not html). In this file
you write the following line:
Testing SSI: <!--#echo
var="HTTP_USER_AGENT"-->
If your server does NOT support SSI, you will
only see "Testing SSI:" in your browser
window. |
Q: |
If my server supports SSI,
do I have to change anything special in the files
including the Trakker? |
A: |
On most servers yes! You
will have to rename any file which uses the
Trakker to "*.shtml". If you don't do
this, the file will probably not be parsed for
SSI by the server, you can test if your server
needs renaming to *.shtml by leaving it .html and
looking at the source. If the <!--#echo
var='HTTP_REFERER'--> tag is still shown
inside the <img> tag, then you will have to
rename the file to *.shtml.
NOTE: Don't forget to change all the links
you have to those files! |
Q: |
What are those referers
for which I need SSI anyway? |
A: |
Every time someone comes
to your site through a link from some other
person's site, he will tell your server from
where he is coming from. Thus, by tracking the
referers, you can easily find out which sites
have linked to your site. |
Q: |
Can I use the counter on
multiple pages? |
A: |
Of course you can.
Although we suggest that you create one counter
for every single page you want a counter on,
since this way you will get better stats. BUT, if you do that, we also ask you to only let the index page be shown in the Top 25 List. |
Q: |
Do you allow any kind of
site to use this Trakker? |
A: |
Our policy changed here!
We still allow any kind of site, BUT any adult related
site MUST set their 'Page may be listed in top25?' option
to no! |
Q: |
What about number of hits,
does that matter? |
A: |
No, currently we don't
have a limit on this. It could well be
that we will limit this if the service gets too
overcrowded. |
Q: |
What do the Stats look
like? |
A: |
You can check here to see a sample stats page. That's
Net-Trak's own stats. |
Q: |
What Image should I use?
|
A: |
The reason you have to put an image on your site is that this is the only way for us to track your hits. Also, the hit will only be counted if the image is actually loaded. So, to get the most out of Net-Trak we advise you to put the image as HIGH on your page as possible.
We know, of course, that one of our buttons will probably not fit in your page that high. That is why we have the 'transparent' option. This is a totally transparent image, so noone accessing your site will notice it. On top of that, it is very small. We think that for YOU the transparent image is the
best thing. BUT there is a small problem. We need hits. The only way that we can keep this service up and running is by getting hits to our site for advertising. Therefor, we think the best thing you could do is use the transparent image and put the code as high as possible on your page. On top of this,
you could download one of your buttons and put it on your local server with a link to either your stats, or our index page (http://net-trak.netrail.net/index.shtml). We would really appreciate that! |
Q: |
What do these cookies do?
|
A: |
The cookies are the most important part of Net-Trak
They will make sure that the unique hits will really be unique hits. Although
we have small safeguards so that people with disabled cookies, or non-cookie
able browsers will not be counted more then once for a unique hit if they
reload the page often in a row, the cookies are the best way to do it safely
and for a 24hour period. The format is like this: net-trakID=1 if this is
set in any browser, this means that he already was on the site with id=ID
on that day, or rather since the last time it was 0000hours GMT. We
hope this explains the usage of our cookies.
