The MantaDB Web Tool

Using MantaDB to Index Directories and Files

MantaDB can perform sophisticated keyword searches over the contents of files on your local disk. However, before it can do this the files must be indexed. Indexing enters the words the files contain into the MantaDB database making them available for fast retrieval. The Index Files on Disk tool performs this indexing task.

Currently only files of type .htm, .html and .txt can be indexed. Other types such as .mp3, .ps and .pdf will be added in future releases.

The Type of files panel contains check boxes that enable you to select the types of file that MantaDB should index. The types of files to be indexed must be selected before any indexing operation can be performed. The Type of files panel also contains a edit field entitled Label/Keywords. The Label/Keywords feature is disabled in this release but will be enabled in the future to support the tagging of certain directories with a searchable text phrase.

The Index Directory Contents and Index Specific Files areas are used to determine the type of index operation required. If you know the names of the files you wish to index and want to select them individually use the Index Specific Files section. If you wish to search and index multiple files in a directory (or directories) without going to the trouble of selecting each one individually use the Index Directory Contents section. The Index Directory Contents option can also descend into subdirectories indexing all files of the specified type in a directory tree.

Because the MantaDB index database does not store duplicate entries, it will not hurt to activate the Index Files on Disk option button again in the future (perhaps to pick up new files added to an already indexed directory). MantaDB will just add the files that are not already in the database and ignore the rest.

The indexing of files on disk is started by selecting the Index Files on Disk button in the Tools menu of the configuration dialog box.

Note: Although the Index Directory Contents option is capable of indexing the contents of subdirectories. However, it will not enter the directories containing the Internet Explorer Cache, the Recycle Bin or the Windows Temp directory.
