All the essential components of a great Web site are there:

• Content, content, content.
• An eye-catching, consistent, stylish design.
• Well-written, clear text.
• Clever use of advanced browser features, consistent with the purpose of the site.
• A text-mode alternative for users of graphically-challenged browsers (although please, do yourself a favour, and upgrade if your hardware permits).

Purists may object that a good Web site should not take so long to load, but let's face it, sometimes the wait is worth it.

Even if — incomprehensibly — you're not enslaved by the allure of Patrick Stewart or a doting Data devotee, this site is worth a visit simply to see Web site construction at its best

On the Web, 'official' sites are often outshone by the efforts of humble fans. Not so with Paramount's Star Trek site dedicated to the latest Star Trek movie. This site is just as impressive as Robert Chen's Holodeck 3, with heaps of information all presented in a way that turns the site itself into an environment.

If you're a member of the Microsoft Network, you'll get access to even cooler stuff in the Star Trek Continuum site accessible from this Web site. You'll find VRML walk-throughs, animated sequences, and loads of info about all four Star Trek series and the movies.

From men in society to women in cloisters . . . take a trip to the Heart of Mary Priory in Denmark.

While this is not the most attractively designed page on the Web, it certainly has its own charm. The site contains a history of the priory and of the Cistercian order, some words from the Prioress, musical snippets from the priory choir, and a photo album of the priory and its surroundings. You'll find links to Vatican Radio and other religious sites.

A good place to stop for a while amidst a hectic night's surfing.

This is one of the most fluently written guides to the Internet you'll find online. Presented in the form of 27 separate classes or 'maps', author Patrick Crispen covers all the major components of the Internet, not just the World Wide Web.

In a relaxed chatty style, Crispen guides you around listservs, e-mail, Usenet, Telnet, FTPing, muds, MOOs, IRC and much, much more.

On the way, he takes a few side roads, taking in Netiquette, neat Internet features to check out and flame wars. You can take the trip in small chunks or read till your eyes bug out. Whichever way, you'll find it worthwhile.
