This setting tells SurfSaver to save the selection on the current page, and
all the pages linked to from the selection. You can also tell SurfSaver how
many levels of pages you wish to save. 1 Level (the default value) saves the
current page and all pages the current page links to. 2 Levels would save the
current page, all pages linked to from the current page, and all pages linked
to from each of these pages.
As you can imagine, you can end up saving a lot of pages. To help narrow
the range, there are two additional settings in the save dialog:
The "Save pages within current Web site" setting saves
pages in the current domain (for example askSam.com).
The "Save pages within full URL path" setting saves pages
which are in or under the current URL path. For example, you could save all
pages on the http://www.askSam.com/janie
Web site -- all pages in this URL path would be saved, but pages on www.asksam.com
root would not be saved.
The SurfSaver Options dialog contains the setting
"Maximum Number of pages". This setting lets you set a
maximum number of pages that can be saved when you do a multi-level save. The
default setting is 1000 pages.
- Select the Filing Cabinet and Folder where you want to save the pages. All
the pages from a single save are placed in the same folder.
- You can modify the date, add keywords, and add
notes. Any notes, keywords, or date changes are applied to each of the
saved pages.
- Choose OK to begin saving the Web pages.
A status dialog appears showing you the level that is being processed and
which page is currently being saved.
The Quick Save Command
The Quick Save Command allows you to quickly save pages into a specific
folder. Quick Save does not display the Save dialog, it simply saves the page
into a folder you selected in the Options menu. This can be a specific
folder, or it can be the last folder in which you saved a page.
To Quick Save a page:
- Display the Web page you wish to save in your browser.
- Start SurfSaver and choose the "SurfSaver Quick Save" menu command.
The page is saved in the default Quick Save folder. You set the default Quick Save folder in the Options dialog.
Repeat the Save process for each page you wish to save.
Organizing Your Pages
SurfSaver makes it very easy to organize your Web pages. In this section, we give you tips on the best way to organize the Web pages you save. When SurfSaver is installed, there is a single folder named "Archive". Any Web pages you save are automatically saved in this folder.
The Save dialog allows you to create new folders and filing cabinets (this process is described in the
Creating and
Deleting Filing Cabinets and Folders section). You can create folders and
filing cabinets for different topics.
For example, you could have a filing cabinet for Work and another one
for Personal Information. Your work cabinet could contain folders like
"Competitive Products", "Industry News", "Purchase
Receipts". Your personal cabinet could contain folders like
"Travel", "Sports", "Shopping",
"Photos", etc.
SurfSaver lets you search through a single folder or through multiple folders.
And SurfSaver makes it very easy to search through all of your folders and
filing cabinets.
If you prefer to keep your information in a single folder, you can use the keyword field to classify and categorize your information.
For example, if you were collecting competitive product information in a single folder, you could enter the name of each product in the keyword field. When you want all information on a particular product, you would simply enter the product name in the keyword field and search. This would list all pages related to this product.
Hot Tip...
Use SurfSaver to record "TODO" items that go with a Web page. For example, if you find a page and there is an action item you'd like to associate with the page, place the word TODO in the Title or Keyword field before you save the page. It's then simple for you to get a list of TODO items by searching for the word TODO in the Title or Keyword field.
Working with Folders on Different Drives and Directories
Note: The Browse button is only available in the Pro version of
SurfSaver.
Using the Browse button in the SurfSaver Save dialog, you can create folders
on different drives and directories. With the SurfSaver Pro version you can even share folders on a network drive with other users.
Creating and Deleting Filing Cabinets and Folders
You organize your Web pages by saving them into
filing cabinets and folders. When you install SurfSaver, there is a single folder named "Archive". Any Web pages you save are automatically saved in this folder.
To Create a New Folder:
- Start SurfSaver and choose the "SurfSaver Save" menu command.
The SurfSaver Save dialog appears. Your current folders and filing cabinets are listed on the left side of the dialog

- Click on the
button to add a new folder.
- Type in the name of the folder and press ENTER.
NOTE: You can also create a new
folder in the Search dialog.
To Create a Filing Cabinet:
- Start SurfSaver and choose the "SurfSaver Save" menu command.
The SurfSaver Save dialog appears. Your current folders and filing cabinets are listed on the left side of the dialog
(click here for a description of the Save dialog).
- Click on the
button to add a new filing
cabinet.
- Type in the name of the filing cabinet and press ENTER.
- Type in a name for a folder. This folder is automatically created in your
new filing cabinet. If you do not want to create a new folder, press
ESC.
NOTE: You can also create a new
filing cabinet in the Search dialog.
To Delete an Existing Folder or Filing Cabinet:
- Start SurfSaver and choose the "SurfSaver Save" menu command.
The SurfSaver Save dialog appears (click here for a description of this dialog).
- Select the filing cabinet or folder you want to delete.
- Click on the
button (or press the DEL key).
A message appears asking if you are sure you want to delete the filing
cabinet or folder. Make sure you really want to delete this filing cabinet or folder before you continue.
- Choose YES to delete the folder or folder.
NOTES:
- When you delete a folder, the folder and all the pages contained in the folder are placed in the recycle bin.
- When you delete a filing cabinet all folders and filing cabinets contained
in that filing cabinet are also deleted and placed in the recycle bin.
- You can also delete filing cabinets and folders from the Search dialog.
To Rename a Folder of Filing Cabinet:
- Start SurfSaver and choose the "SurfSaver Save" menu command.
The SurfSaver Save dialog appears. Your current folders are listed on the left side of the dialog
(click here for a description of the Save dialog).
- Click on the filing cabinet or folder you wish to rename and press F2.
- Type in the new name and press ENTER.
Copying and Moving Pages between Folders
If you save a page in the wrong folder or would like to have a copy of a page in multiple folders, SurfSaver lets you move or copy the page. See
"Search Results" for details.
The Save Dialog
The Save dialog consists of the following components:
FILING CABINETS AND FOLDERS
You can organize your Web pages in filing cabinets and folders. The left part of the Save dialog displays a list of the current folders. A Web page is saved in the selected folder. The buttons above the folders let you create a new
filing cabinet or folder or delete existing ones.
BROWSE BUTTON (only available in the Pro version)
This button lets you select the drive and directory where you wish to save a Web
page.
TITLE
This field contains the title information from the Web page you are saving. The title is displayed in the Search Results when you use SurfSaver to search for a page. You can edit the text which appears in the title field.
KEYWORDS
This field lets you enter keywords for the page. Keywords are useful to help categorize and classify your information. You can search for any of the words you enter in this field.
NOTES
This field lets you enter notes about the page. You can search for the information you enter in the notes field. The notes field can contain up to 10K of text.
USER (only available in the Pro version)
Records the computer name and the user who saved the page.
URL
The URL for the page is displayed below the notes field. You cannot edit this field. SurfSaver uses this information if you want to re-access the original page. You can also copy the URL to paste into another document (making it easy to insert a URL as a footnote).
DATE and TIME
Records the date and time that you save the page.
SAVE CURRENT PAGE / LINKED PAGES
Tells SurfSaver to save the current page and all the pages the current page
links to. You can also tell SurfSaver how many levels
of pages you wish to save. 1 Level (the default value) saves the current page
and all pages the current page links to. 2 Levels would save the current page,
all pages linked to from the current page, and all pages linked to from each
of these pages.
SAVE PAGES WITHIN CURRENT WEB SITE
Only saves
pages in the current domain (for example askSam.com).
SAVE PAGES WITHIN FULL URL PATH
Saves pages
which are in or under the current URL path. For example, you could save all
pages on the http://www.askSam.com/janie
Web site -- all pages in this URL path would be saved, but pages on www.asksam.com
root would not be saved.
SAVE GRAPHICS
If checked, SurfSaver saves the graphics as well as the text of your Web
pages. Although the graphics used on Web pages are compressed, if you
choose to save them, your folders will take up more space on your hard
drive. This does not affect the speed of the search.
