Installing Your External Modem

This section takes you through the installation of an external modem. If you are
installing an external modem, read this section. If you are installing an internal modem,
go back to the section entitled, "Installing Your Internal
Modem." This chapter discusses the following topics:

Gathering Everything You Need
You'll need all of the following to use your external modem:
- One of the following setups:

a 486 or higher running Windows 95 with at least 8 MB RAM |
|
|
a 486 or higher running Windows 98 with at least 8 MB RAM |
|
|
a 486 or higher running Windows NT 4.0 with at least 16 MB RAM |
with at least 4 MB of free hard disk space. A mouse is recommended but not
necessary. |
- Your modem
- This manual
- The CD that came with your modem
- A power adapter that came with your modem
- An RJ-11 phone cable with country-specific wall plug
- Microphone and speakers
Installing Your External Modem
To install an external modem, follow these steps:
- Turn your computer off.

- Plug one end of the serial cable (included in your package) into the corresponding jack
on the back of the modem, the other end into one of your computer's serial (COM) ports.
Tighten the securing screws. If your serial port is of the 9-pin type (DB9), use a
25-to-9-pin cable adapter (not included in your package).
- Plug the power adapter into the electrical power socket on the left side of the modem's
rear panel.
- Plug one end of the provided telephone cable into the modem’s phone jack. Plug the
other end into a telephone wall jack.
- Plug in your power supply and turn on the power switch.
- Insert the SuperCD and turn on your computer. When Windows 95/98 starts, it will detect
your new modem and ask you for a driver. The driver is in the \DRIVERS directory on your
SuperCD.
- To ensure proper operation and compliance with PTT requirements, you must run the Modem
Country Setup utility before using your SupraExpress 56k PRO modem. Consult the online
manual on the SuperCD for information about Modem Country Setup.
- Click on the Start button, then Run and enter D:\START.EXE (replace D with the driver
letter for you CD-ROM if necessary) and click OK.
- Click on Start Installation, select your product and click Next.
- Select Modem Country Setup.
- Select a language and then click on the >> button to go to the next screen.
- Select your country flag from the list and click on the >> button to begin the
configuration. The utility will configure your modem for use in the specified country.
- Click the Quit button to exit the utility when the utility is finished.

VIOLATE GOVERNMENT CERTIFICATION OF THIS PRODUCT. THE STICKERS ON THE MODEM INDICATE THE
COUNTRIES WHERE THIS PRODUCT MAY BE LEGALLY USED. IN ORDER TO COMPLY WITH LOCAL SAFETY,
PERFORMANCE, AND GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS, DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT EXCEPT IN THE COUNTRIES
WHERE THIS PRODUCT IS CERTIFIED.
- Your modem is installed. Now you can install your data and fax software.
Now restart your computer and carefully follow the online instructions given to you in
Windows 95/98.
After you've completed the Windows 95/98 driver installation instructions, continue
with the following section.
- Insert the CD and select your language.
- Click on Start Installation, select your product and click Next.
- Select the type of installation (Minimal, Standard or Custom - we recommend Standard if
you're running the installation for the first time).
- Select the path that you would like to install to (either by typing it in directly or by
clicking on the Browse button) and click on Next>.
- Some information compiled by the Diamond Hotline will be displayed in the next window.
Click on Next> (or on <Back to change your installation options).
- The corresponding components will be installed to the specified directory.
- Select instructions in your language and then click on the >> button to go to the
next screen.
- Select your country flag from the list and click on the >> button to begin the
configuration. The utility will configure your modem for use in the specified country.
- Click the Quit button to exit the utility when the utility is finished. You will see a
message saying that your modem has been successfully configured.
- Your modem is now installed. Now install your fax and data software.
- Eject the CD and store it in a safe place.

WHERE THIS PRODUCT IS CERTIFIED.
NOTE — If the utility does not find the modem or produces an error message,
please review the MSETUP.TXT and PNPFAQ.TXT files on the CD.
Modem Indicator Lights
The modem has eight indicator lights to report its status.
