Installing Your Internal Modem
Computers come with various board layouts. You may need to modify the following
procedure to match your situation. If you need assistance, refer to your computer's
manual.
- Turn off your computer and unplug its power cable.
CAUTION
-- Unplug your computer before removing the cover or you could hurt yourself and damage
your equipment.
- Remove the computer's cover according to the directions in the computer's manual.
- Decide which of the computer's PCI expansion slots you want to install the modem in.
- Remove the metal bracket corresponding to the selected PCI slot from the rear panel of
the computer. Save the screw. Touch one hand on the metal computer frame to discharge any
static electricity that may have accumulated on your body or clothing.
- Hold the modem over the expansion slot. Place the modem into the slot and push it down
gently until it is firmly seated.

- Use the screw you removed in Step 4 to attach the modem's metal bracket to the computer.
- Replace the computer's cover.

- Plug one end of the supplied phone cable into the phone jack on the modem's metal
bracket. Plug the other end into a telephone wall jack.
Steps 9 - 11 apply only to speakerphone ("SP") models with microphone and
speaker jacks.
- Plug your microphone into the microphone jack on the
modem’s back panel.
- If you are using powered speakers, insert the
speakers’ plug into the speaker jack on the modem’s rear panel.
- Alternatively, you can use a cable to use your multimedia system as the output for your
phone conversations. Plug one end of the cord into the speaker jack on the modem’s
rear panel and the other into the line-in port on your soundcard.
- Plug in your computer and turn it on. The modem turns on automatically when you turn on
the computer.
- Insert the SuperCD. When Windows 95/98 starts, it will detect your new modem and ask you
for a driver. The driver is in the \DRIVERS directory on your SuperCD.
- Please select your country from the displayed list.

NOTE — If the utility does not find the modem or produces an error message,

This next section shows you how to perform a quick test to see if your modem is
installed correctly.
- Beginning at Start, go to Settings, then Control Panel.
- Double-click Modems.
- Click on the Diagnostics tab.
- Highlight the name of your modem, then click the More Info... button. You will get the
response that the computer is communicating with the modem.
When it's done, you should see a box showing a list of AT Commands on the left side, and
the responses from the modem on the right. If this happens for you, your modem is
installed correctly.
If you run into problems with an application you are using with the modem, you should
check your software setup or options. This test you just performed shows that the modem is
functioning correctly, and that it is working as expected with Windows 95/98.
- Your modem is now installed. Now install the fax and data software that came with your
modem. This is explained in the software's online documentation.
Windows NT 4.0 users
To finish your Windows NT 4.0 installation, follow these steps:
- Beginning at Start, go to Settings, and select the Control Panel.
- Double-click the Modems icon.
- If you see a list of modems, click the Add button, then click Next.
- If you don't see a list of modems, click the Next button.
- At this point, ONE of the following three things happens:
- Windows NT displays "Standard Modem Detected" in the Verify Modem window.
|
|
A |
|
Insert the Install disk into your floppy drive. |
|
|
B |
|
Click the Change button in the Verify Modem window. |
|
|
C |
|

D |
|

|
|
E |
|
Select the name of your modem, click Next, and continue until you see the Finish
button. |
- Windows NT displays the correct modem name in the Verify Modem window. In this case,
click the Next button to continue until you see the Finish button.
- Windows NT displays the message "Modem Not Detected." This usually means that
the modem has been configured with a COM port/IRQ combination that is being used by
another device. Re-evaluate the COM port and IRQ settings that are available, and try
another combination.
- If you need to try again, you may find it helpful to make a list of what devices are
using what IRQs. In the Control Panel you should look at settings in Ports, SCSI adapters,
Multimedia, and Network. The specific location of this information depends on what device
you are looking at. In general, highlight the device, click the Properties or Settings
button, then click on a Resources tab or a Properties button. From your list, you can
determine what IRQs are not being used. Go back to the COM port you added, and assign it
an IRQ that isn't being used by another device. Then you'll be back at the beginning of
Step 4.
- Click the Finish button.
- Eject the disk and store it in a safe place.
- From the Control Panel, double-click on Ports.
- Select the COM port where you installed your modem, and click Settings.
- Set the flow control to Hardware, then click Advanced.
- Make sure the COM port, I/O address, and IRQ are all showings the same settings you used
when you set the jumpers on the modem.
- You may be prompted to restart for the changes to take effect.
- Insert the CD and select your language.
- Click on Start Installation, select your product and click Next.
- Select Modem Country Setup.
- Select a language and then click on the >> button to go to the next screen.
- Select your country flag from the list and click on the >> button to begin the
configuration. The utility will configure your modem for use in the specified country.
- Click the Quit button to exit the utility when the utility is finished. You will see a
message saying that your modem has been successfully configured.
- Your modem is now installed. Now install your fax and data software.
- Eject the disk and CD and store them in a safe place.
