Settings - Remote

Remote connections (i.e. FTP) are accessed by double-clicking their icons, just like ordinary subfolders. The file being double-clicked is usually just a text file containing information for establishing the connection.

This dialog deals with protecting the information in such remote connection files, and with automatically closing inactive connections.

Click the controls of the dialog in fig 1 to jump to their associated help text.

Master Password

Since login information can optionally be stored within remote connection files, some method of protecting this information is needed, so that an occasional user of the computer system may not access the remote connections of someone else. This is where the Master Password comes in.

The Master Password is used to encrypt the login information in all remote connections that are created during the life span of that Master Password. To use any of the login information stored in remote connection files, first, the Master Password must be provided. Failing to do so, the login information cannot be decrypted.

On connecting to several remote sites, the master password need only be provided the first time.

For more information on creating remote connections, see Creating a New FTP Connection.

NOTE: When changing Master Password, remote connections created using the previous Master Password are still encrypted using the old Master Password.

Forget Now

This button can be used to make Probe 'forget' the Master Password. This may be useful when for example temporarily leaving a computer, and wanting to make sure that remote connections cannot be accessed.

This button does not change the password, it only makes sure that someone attempting to open a remote site from within Probe will have to provide the master password, provided that the login data of the connection is encrypted.

Reevaluate master password after

If a certain period of inactivity elapses, Probe can be made to 'forget' the Master Password, so that it must be provided again when accessing a remote connection. Check this option to enable this.

NN minutes of inactivity have elapsed

This specifies how many minutes Probe must be inactive (no user interaction) before forgetting the Master Password.

Automatic Disconnect

When a remote connection is inactive for a given time period, Probe can automatically disconnect that connection.

After NN minutes of inactivity

Check this option to enable automatic disconnect, and edit how many minutes to wait before disconnecting.

Disconnect from remote site automatically

Using this option, Probe disonnects from the remote connection without notifying the user.

Query user on action

Using this option, Probe will query on whether to disconnect or not, when the given time period of inactivity has elapsed.

Disconnect if Probe is minimized...

This option will cause Probe to query on whether to disconnect or not if Probe is currently not minimized (at the taskbar). If minimized it will disconnect without querying.
