7. The first use of insulin to treat diabetes mellitus (1922)

The administration of insulin by researchers Frederick G. Banting, Charles H. Best, John J. R. Macleod, and James B. Collip, all of the University of Toronto, led to the effective treatment of an often-fatal illness. It also initiated an era of understanding of the molecular basis of disease and the use of biological products to control diseases.
