This page is dedicated to bringing you the latest in movie news hosted by the best character on SCTV (in this fan's opinion), played by the excellent Joe Flaherty.
AAAAaaawwooo! I bid you ... welcome to issue #14 of Count Floyd's Movies News. The X Files has finally made it to the big screen. The film is fairly true to the TV show with Fox Mulder and Dana Scully investigating yet another conspiracy. Good news for fans of the series is that you will not be disappointed. For those who are not into the show then you might feel as if you are entering the theater a little late. You will probably have the feeling that you have missed something. There are some familiar faces like their boss played by Mitch Pileggi and the mysterious Cigarette Smoking Man. A new face in the film is an author of conspiracy books who happens to be onto some hot information. He is played by Martin Landau, who is getting more interesting in his later years. The film was written and produced by Chris Carter and was directed by Rob Bowman, who directed 25 of the episodes for television. The film stars David Duchovny as Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully. Big fans of the show have probably seen this film already. So if you are a marginal fan I suggest you see it on the big screen and if you've never seen the series you may want to wait for it to come out on video. The truth is out there. The truth is also in the movie news. Please walk this way.
I recently saw "The Wedding Singer" starring Adam Sandler. The film deals with the relationship woes of Robbie, who makes his living singing at weddings and other rent-a-hall functions. His long-term relationship doesn't go his way so he has to deal with that. Along the way he meets Julia, played by Drew Barrymore, who is a waitress at a lot of these functions. She is also having problems of her own. Gee, I wonder how this will end?
I am a big Adam Sandler fan (yes, I have one of his cassettes) and I thought his performance was pretty good. He played a fairly normal guy and came off very sincere, which is something different for him. This film was set in 1985 so an added plus is the funky music being played at the weddings. Remember the 80's hair styles? The film was directed by Frank Coraci who gives this subject pretty standard treatment. I feel he loses control at the end but it is still good enough to recommend for home consumption. I saw this on pay-per-view so it may be on tape already and if not then it will soon be. Check it out.

The survey question from the last issue was "Who is currently your favorite director?" The survey SAYS:
The survey for this issue is "who are 2 of your favorite character actors: 1 from the past and 1 from the present?" For me it would have to be Strother Martin from the past and Steve Buscemi from the present. What is a character actor? Well, the answer may be different for each person but I believe in general it is an actor who everybody recognizes his or her face and/or voice but few remember their names. They also don't have the pretty looks needed to be the lead player but are often the villain and they often croak in the film. They also usually steal the scene from the more popular actor. So, who are 2 of your favorite character actors preferably 1 from the past and 1 from the present. To answer the survey question please click here.
AAAaaawwoooo! Count Floyd will return in issue #15 titled "Hexacat or How I Found a Clever Way to Sneak a Dirty Word Into a Film Title" due out on 8-29-98.
