Copslpm.exe: Common Open Policy Service Local Policy ModuleNEW

Server-only: This tool is included in the Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit only.

The COPS (Common Open Policy Service) LPM (Local Policy Module) enables a COPS-based Policy Server to provide admission control decisions to a Windows 2000 ACS (Admission Control Service) for RSVP (Resource Reservation Protocol) requests. The ACS acts as the logical gatekeeper for RSVP message propagation across the network. With the COPS LPM installed on the ACS, the RSVP requests are passed to the COPS Policy Server for admission control decisions. The COPS LPM communicates with the COPS Policy Server using the COPS protocol.

Minimum Requirements

COPS LPM requires Windows 2000 Server, ACS, and a COPS-06 enabled Policy Server. The installation prompts the user for the primary and backup policy server system information.

Event Logging

Every time the ACS service is started or stopped it loads or unloads Icopslpm.dll. When this dynamic-link library (DLL) gets loaded or unloaded, an error condition occurs, or a successful operation occurs, a message gets logged into Windows 2000 system log. These messages can be seen with Event Viewer (found in Administrative Tools). Messages logged by ACS have the source RSVP and ones logged by the COPS LPM have the source iCOPSLPM. Informational messages get logged for all successful operations, such as connecting to the server, initializing (loading) or deinitializing (unloading) the DLL. Error messages get logged for all error conditions, such as failure to read the registry or failure to connect to a policy server. There are also a few messages that get logged under certain conditions, such as messages about communication failures with the policy server.
