10-40cm. This fairly large (40-70 mm across) white flower is striking partly because of its size. One flower grows at the end of each hairy stalk, and an Alpine meadow is likely to have many scattered about.
Flowers
May-July. 6-7 white petals form a shallow cup around a bunch of yellow stamen.
Leaves
The basal leaves are deeply divided, in three parts. The upper leaves, in mid-stem, are deeply divided in two parts.
Habitat
Chalky Alpine soil only; rocky fields, Alpine pastures and open pine forests; usually above 1800 m altitude. A Mercantour flower. Our photos were taken around the Lac d'Allos, at 1800 m.
