La caperuza gris que se torna negruzca hacia el vientre identifica a esta reinita poco confiada. Algunos individuos tienen un anillo blanco incompleto alrededor del ojo. Tamaño: 13.3 cm.; peso: 12-13 g. No camina, sino que brinca al forrajear. Anida en el sur de Canadá y el noreste de los Estados Unidos, llegando por el sur hasta Virginia Occidental. Inverna de Nicaragua hasta el oeste de Venezuela y Ecuador. En Puerto Rico, accidental en la maleza de bosques costeros y bosques secos (por ejemplo, avistamientos el 30 de diciembre de 1977 en el Conteo Navideño de Aves de Cabo Rojo; en el Barrio Aguacate, Aguadilla, el 15 de octobre de 2003).
