A gray hood with a black lower border identify this shy warbler. Some birds have a broken white arc around the eye. Length: 13.3 cm.; weight: 12-13 g. Does not walk---only hops while foraging. Breeds across southern Canada and in the northeastern USA, south to West Virginia. Winters from Nicaragua south to western Venezuela and Ecuador. Accidental in undergrowth of coastal and dry forests of Puerto Rico (e.g., Cabo Rojo Christmas Bird Count, 30 December 1977; Barrio Aguacate, Aguadilla, 15 October 2003).
