Un ave incomparable, de espalda negra y pico rojo y negro. La mandφbula inferior es mßs larga que la superior. Tama±o: 40-50 cm.; peso: machos 365 g., hembras 265 g. Anida en el sur de AmΘrica del Norte y en AmΘrica del Sur. Un visitante invernal raro en Puerto Rico, aunque tambiΘn ha sido observado en el verano (por ejemplo, el 3 de julio de 1998 en la Reserva Natural Ca±o Tiburones). Esta especie vuela al ras sobre aguas saladas o dulces, con la mandφbula inferior en el agua. El pico cierra por reflejo al tocar peque±os peces. TAXONOMÍA: CHARADRIIFORMES; LARIDAE; Rynchopinae |
