Ave de presa de plumaje negro con alas muy anchas. La corta cola está decorada con barras blancas y negras. Tamaño: 43-52 cm.; peso: machos 790 g., hembras 1,200 g. Audio (D. Von Gausig). Anida desde Arizona hasta el norte de América del Sur y en Cuba y San Vicente. Se alimenta de cangrejos y camarones de río. Accidental en Puerto Rico.
