A black hawk with a short, black-and-white barred tail and very broad wings. Length: 43-52 cm.; weight: males 790 g., females 1,200 g. Audio (D. Von Gausig). Breeds from Arizona south to northern South America, and on St. Vincent and Cuba. Feeds on crabs and crayfish. Accidental in Puerto Rico.
