A long, downward-curved bill---which it uses to probe crab burrows---distinguishes this large shorebird, even from far away. It is larger in overall size and bill length than the Whimbrel, and lacks the WhimbrelÆs head stripes. Length: 50-65 cm.; weight: 493-951 g. Audio (B. Beck). Breeds in central North America; winters on the Gulf and Pacific coasts of the USA and Mexico. Accidental in Puerto Rico.
