A brown finch with black and white stripes on the head, and a prominent white throat patch. Length: 15 cm.; weight: 25-31 g. Audio 2 (M. Oberle). Breeds in the northeastern USA and southern Canada. Winters in the southeastern USA. Accidental in Puerto Rico (San Juan, 15 Jan. and 16 Feb. 1971), but usually frequents coastal areas, brushy fields and gardens.
