A thick-necked, gull-like bird with a relatively short bill. It has two plumage forms: either all dark brown or light gray with a white head, neck, and undersides. Length: 45-50 cm.; weight: 450-1,000 g. Breeds in large colonies on the far northern coasts of North America and Eurasia. Accidental at sea off the West Indies, but not yet documented off Puerto Rico. The closest nesting colonies are in coastal Newfoundland, Canada.
