The male has a bright orange head with a black face patch. Females (see photo) are much duller, but still have distinctive facial markings. Length: 12 cm.; weight: 10 g. Breeds in the northeastern USA, southern Canada, and the Appalachian Mountains south to northern Georgia. Local populations increase after Spruce Budworm outbreaks on the breeding range. Winters in the Andes Mountains of South America. Rare in winter in coastal and wet forests of Puerto Rico (e.g. Barrio Papayo, Lajas, 12 May 1998). Audio 2 (M. Oberle).
