A bright green parrot with a yellow head. The front of the folded wing is red. Length: 35-38 cm.; weight: 340-535 g. Native to Belize and the Pacific and Gulf coasts of Mexico. Worldwide this species is considered endangered with a total wild population of less than 7,000. Although this species has bred in the wild in Puerto Rico it is uncommon in widely scattered localities such as Caguas and Fajardo.

TAXONOMY: PSITTACIFORMES; PSITTACIDAE; Arinae. Formerly lumped with two closely related species as the Yellow-crowned Parrot (Amazona ochrocephala), but taxonomists recently split the Yellow-crowned Parrot into three separate species. The three species are now the Yellow-headed Parrot, the Yellow-crowned Parrot (Amazona ochrocephala), and the Yellow-naped Parrot (Amazona auropalliata ).
