A large green parrot with a bright red crown; in flight a red patch on the wing is visible. Length: 33 cm.; weight: 316 g. Breeds in northeastern Mexico. Worldwide this species is considered endangered with a total population of 3,000-6,500. Illegal trapping for the pet trade is a threat to this species in the wild. Introduced in a southern California, southern Florida, Texas and Hawaii, and in Puerto Rico, where a small population is established near Salinas. This species can occasionally be seen flying between roosts in Salinas and foraging areas at dawn or dusk.

TAXONOMY: PSITTACIFORMES; PSITTACIDAE; Arinae. Also called Green-cheeked Amazon.
