An elongated black eye spot and white primaries help distinguish this species in winter plumage from the commoner Roseate Tern. Length: 33-36 cm.; weight: 130-190 g. Audio 2 (M. Oberle). Breeds in north central North America. Normally winters along the coasts of Mexico and southern North America. Rare in harbors in Puerto Rico (e.g. Mayagüez Harbor, 26 Jan. 1969, 7 and 27 Jan. 2001, 23 March 2001, 2-19 January 2002; San Juan Harbor 21-28 Jan.1969; Palo Seco, 6 Mar. 1971; Constitution Bridge, 1 Apr. 1979).
