A tall, white-and-black shorebird, with a narrow, upturned bill. In breeding plumage, it has a tan wash to the head. Length: 41-51 cm.; weight: 302-461 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Breeds on the east coast of the USA, and in western North America. Winters in Central America, the southeastern USA, Bahamas, and Cuba. Accidental on wetlands in Puerto Rico.
