Smaller than the WilsonÆs Phalarope. In non-breeding, winter plumage has a black face patch and a streaked gray back. Length: 18-19 cm.; weight: males 33 g., females 39 g. Breeds on wetlands in Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland and Eurasia, and winters primarily at sea. Accidental in Puerto Rico, but probably more common in offshore waters than currently recognized (e.g., 24 April 1980; two birds at Cabo Rojo, 30 December 1977 and one at Cabo Rojo, 29 December 1999, 17 March 2000, and 8 November 2000; Punta Guaniquilla, 18 Feb. 2001).

TAXONOMY: CHARADRIIFORMES; SCOLOPACIDAE; Phalaropodinae. Formerly called the Northern Phalarope. In Spanish it is also called "Falaropo Picofino," although the WilsonÆs Phalarope also has a thin bill.
