March Madness is off to a flying start.

  • Central Florida, a team with a sub-.500 record at 11-18, earned the first automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament by defeating Mercer 86-77 Saturday in the Trans America Athletic Conference championship game at Deland, Fla.

  • North Carolina-Greensboro (20-9) earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth after routing Liberty, 79-53, today in the Big South Conference championship game at Lynchburg, Va.

  • South Carolina State (22-7) beat Coppin State 69-56 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship game at Tallahassee, Fla, to earn its first NCAA Tournament berth since 1989.

  • Austin Peay defeated Murray State 70-68 in the Ohio Valley Conference championship game at Nashville, Tenn.

  • Purdue, ranked No. 5 in the nation, officially clinched the outright Big Ten title and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tourney when Penn State suffered a 65-60 loss at Minnesota on Saturday. The Big Ten does not conduct a post-season tournament.
