RACISM & CONTEMPORARY STATUS

Our say...

Is Australia a racist society?
Australia, like most other post-colonial societies suffers from racism. Aboriginal people are affected by this. They are also economically very marginal and suffer enormously on most measures of lifestyle quality: health, infant mortality, life span, income, education and employment.

What is the position of Aboriginal people in Australia today?
Much has been done in the last generation and successive governments have tried many and varied policies and programs. The successes that do exist tend to have come where Aboriginal people have been given the right and opportunity to run their own lives and where respect for cultural difference has been considered an essential component.
