When entering a Japanese house, you should always get out of your shoes first. Usually there are already slippers ready at the entrance.
When entering a room with tatami floor, you also have to take off your slippers. On tatami one should only walk in socks or barefoot.

Traditionally the meals are held in the tatami room on a low table. The participants sit on the floor. There are special chapters about sitting techniques and table manners in this guide as well as information pages about the rules for using the toilet and the bathroom.
