Horseback Treks in Arhangay - 1998

June 7-20, August 9-22, August 19-September 1

Day 1: Depart for Beijing.

Day 2: Arrive Beijing and transfer to hotel.

Day 3: Fly to Ulaan Baatar, capitol of Mongolia, overnight in local hotel.

Day 4: Fly to Tsetserleg, capitol of Arhangay aimag, meet wranglers and horses, camp out.

Day 5-11: Ride 20 miles per day with vehicle support. Camp out each night. We will be riding through wide valleys and over low mountain passes with a mixture of forest and steppe. Our riding area is home to many herding families, and we will be in contact with the local people on a daily basis.

Day 12: Return flight to Ulaan Baatar, afternoon sightseeing.

Day 13: Return flight to Beijing. Overnight in hotel.

Day 14: Return flight home.

Our "short" riding adventure in Mongolia provides a full week of riding, including a rest day for the horses and ourselves, plus sightseeing in Ulaan Baatar and an optional "on your own" extension in Beijing. Located in west-central Mongolia, Arhangay is called the "Switzerland of Mongolia" for its beautiful scenery: forests, rivers and mountains. On the horseback trek we cover approximately 20 miles per day and meet our support vehicle each night at a new campsite. Our personal luggage and the accouterments of "catered camping" are transported in the support vehicle making for light, fast travel on horseback. We camp out each night with our mobile "American ger" and spacious two-person tents. During each dayÆs ride weÆll visit the gers of local herders and have a chance to experience nomadic life on the Central Asian steppe. Though we recommend a riding background for this trip, the support vehicle always has room for anyone who is ready for a break from the saddle.
