Mosquitoes

Information about mosquitoes living in the Amazon, including the Perne Longo.

Perne-Longo Mosquito

The Perne-longo (long foot) mosquito is one of the loudest and most annoying. Having two or three of them in a room can keep you awake all night. In rural Amaz⌠nia it is known by its Indian name, carapanß.

The whining sound is used by the female carapanß to attract the male. The sound is produced by the mosquito's wingbeat frequency of 500 cycles per second, and is within the octave of middle C, usually the note G. This has created an unusual problem for outdoor opera singers because it has been reported that when the singer hits this note, the insects converge upon their open mouths, having become confused by the singer's voice and thinking that it is another mosquito.

It has been reported that opera singers in outdoor theatres have complained that the insects converge upon their open mouth
