This section lets you find out more about the animals which live in Amaz⌠nia. Although there are few big animals, like the elephants and giraffes which live in Africa, Amaz⌠nia is very special because of the huge variety of animals that live there. Much of this variety is in the insect world – scientists estimate that a single hectare of rainforest provides a home to over 50,000 different types of insects and spiders – with over a million different species in all of Amaz⌠nia. By comparison, there are 20,000 species in all of Britain, and even fewer species in New Zealand.
