Capybara

Imagine an overgrown guinea pig about the same size as the family dog. The capybara is the world's largest rodent.

Capybaras live along the banks of lakes and rivers in South America, and although they are slightly clumsy on land, they are excellent swimmers and divers. Capybaras can stay underwater for several minutes, and can even sleep underwater with just their nose poking out above the surface of the water.

They eat plants and grasses in and out of the water.

Locals consider the capybara to be a delicacy. The hide is also made into high quality leather. The capybara's natural enemies include anaconda, jacarĪ˜ and jaguar.
