Places to Visit

When your class is following the Amazon Adventure, you may want to try visiting a few places to learn more about Amaz⌠nia or about related issues such as the environment or living in a frontier. Here are some suggestions for places that you might want to try.

  • Zoo. If you live in a major centre, there may be a nearby zoo. Visiting the zoo is a good way to learn about animals and to see them for yourself. You may even be able to see a few animals from Amaz⌠nia. Auckland's Zoo has a special rainforest enclosure containing Amazonian monkeys.
  • Local musuem. Try visiting your local musuem to find out what life was like in New Zealand 150 years ago when New Zealand was still a frontier. Find out what life was like for the settlers and for the Maori who were already living here.
  • Department of Conservation. Contact your local Department of Conservation office. They may be able to tell you about the efforts that they are doing to save native forests and endangered species in New Zealand such as the Kakapo and Tuatara. There may be even be a conservation programme in your area which you can visit.
