Actually, no. When I did eat meat (up until about last Christmas) I made sure that it was "cruelty-free" organic meat from a registered organic meat producer inspected by the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Now I have taken the easy way out - I just don't eat meat any more.

Entirely possibly. Since I don't eat the stuff at all any more, it doesn't make any difference.

Ah, this would be BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encepalophy), which manifests itself in humans as a form of Creutzfelds-Jakob Disease(CJD). Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but CJD has been found in America too (and not only in the X Files...).

Given that American slaughterhouses operate on broadly similar principles to British ones, you could be in for a rather nasty shock quite soon. The crucial question for America is "Are your cows fed recycled cow brain?". If so, start worrying. Of course, the fact that CJD has displayed hibernation periods of 5 years (typically) does mean that BSE-infected beef has been consumed for a good few years now across the world.

Today, Britain, tomorrow, the world...
